How do you reassure family and friends that motorcycle riding is not a death sentence?

Thread title is misleading, but to answer your question-

You cant, statistics show they may well be correct.
enjoy dicing with death amongst other road users,
or ride the ride the track instead of the road.

Not sure you can. Taking a course and rideing responsibly will be the best evidence.

I went on a few rides sneakingly and then showed them photos of the places I visited. That kinda worked. Plus the safety gear purchase and the fact that I was riding with others who were doing the same.

nahh all good man. just take the safety course in your area, wear the proper gear but them main thing that may make them think it isn't a death sentence is to ride for a while without a crash. If you ride for a year or so and don't have a crash and tell them you feel comfortable riding on the road they may think that it's not as bad as they thought it was. However, the statistics do show you are more at risk being on a motorcycle but be alert and sensible and hopefully they will understand :)

Tell them about picking times to ride, like avoiding rush hour traffic, night time rides, which are more dangerous. And picking roads that are known for more accidents. If you plan a day accordingly, choose good times and stay away from bad roads, always always wear as much gear as possible..your chances of having an accident because of a motorist are lessened. Not fool proof, but better.
