i placed an order for some oxford carbon heated grip wraps. wanted something i could remove and change it to another motorcycle when needed. how can i wire them so they will turn off with my motorcycle instead of being hot all the time. thought about using an add-a-fuse- but those seem to be to big to be able to close the fuse box cover. also plan to wire some led lights the same way so i wont have to worry about them draining my battery. any ideas? yes i am a noob when it comes to motorcycle wiring lol
Here's a link to my power hub install thread. Twisted Throttle Power Hub Install
If you scroll down you will come to a photo of the bottom of the fuse box with a wire tap connection. I tapped into the headlight fuse for switched power. That should get you what you need.
Do you have a test light?

right now, no. but i will pick one up tomorrow. didnt think of a wire tap. thought about using pigtail fuses as well. not sure which would be best.
Before you even begin installing the grip set, or modifying it in anyway for your install - hook the battery connections up to the battery, and hook all of the components together and turn it on to make sure it works.
I made the mistake of cutting the power leads off of my Oxfords to hook it up to my switched fuse block. Everything installed and I turn it on for the first time. I get good lights up in the switch unit, but no heat.
I wrote Oxford asking advice. I asked them if it was OK to unplug the grips while the unit was on to check for voltage. They said Yes. I have none.
I do have intermittent voltage back at the white plug coming out of the rear control unit.
Both grips have sufficient resistance.
Bottom line is - because of my haste and mods, I have voided any warranty.
the kit does, i want the heated grips to turn off when i turn the bike off.
In that case, you'll need a relay. Wire the coil terminals of the relay to ground and a 12v lead that goes on and off with the motorcycle (like the headlight -- whatever is convenient). Then run a fused wire from the battery to one of the relay switch terminals. The other relay switch terminal will then feed the + of the grips and the - of the grips goes to ground. Now your grips will go on and off with the ignition....

If you plug into the power after the fuse for the headlight you won't need a relay to accomplish this. Just unhook the fuse box so you can get at the bottom of the fuses, where the wires come out, and plug your test light into the connectors for the headlight fuse. Put your key in the on position. if the tester lights up, turn the key off and see if the test light turns off. if it does, you have the right wire to tap into.
