The purpose of this is to get it to engage into 1st from neutral while the shaft is still turning a little. If you wait too long, the dogs may not be in a spot where they will drop in. When I do this all of about 40 bikes I've had always went right into 1st from N...every time. And if they clunk; it means nothing.

I have the same problem. Often will not go into first unless I roll it back slightly. Often getting cluncks with downshifts to 1st. Clutch adjustment may be needed but the problem of downshifting to first has been there since shortly after purchase. Mentioned this at 600 mile maintenance but still an issue at 2500 miles. Need to adjust chain for sure.

That will always be an issue because it is not an issue. The trannys work that way..they can't be fixed because there is nothing to fix. Improve your technique or live with it.
