The purpose of this is to get it to engage into 1st from neutral while the shaft is still turning a little. If you wait too long, the dogs may not be in a spot where they will drop in. When I do this all of about 40 bikes I've had always went right into 1st from N...every time. And if they clunk; it means nothing.
