Default Help! Filter put in wrong way round!

Hi all, I took my bike for 1st oil n filter change today at my local Honda in Thailand. The head mech wasn't there and the boy put the filter in wrong way round!!! I realised when on my way home as in 6th gear the bike stalled!! Took it back n the main mech discovered the problem. I didn't travel more than 10 k with filter in wrong. Bike seems ok now, Im just worried that the engine may now be damaged?
Please give me some reassurance as I'm totally freaking out!!!
Thanks

You encountered the problem soon, and had it put right quickly...... don't worry about it. If the engine is damaged the problem should be with the dealer and Honda, not you.

I have never had any problem getting various things sorted under warranty in Thailand, and I don't see that it should be any different for a motorcycle. I had an induction cooker pack up more than six months out of warranty. I expected to pay to have it repaired, but the job was done for free.

I'm afraid the fact that you noticed something wrong because the engine stopped proves that damage has definitely been done. Oil starvation has probably damaged all the bikes plain bearings. Provided the service was being carried out by an authorised dealer I would expect nothing less than a replacement engine from Honda.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Thanks, I'll go back on Monday morning. The engine now sounds louder and there is a rattle that was not there before. Can anyone tell me if the filter was in wrong, does that mean that for those 10km there was no oil getting to where it was needed?

If the engine stopped... Something bad happened. Make them replace it.

Or make them extend your warranty by like 2 years.

Oils primary job is a coolant, your engine stalled because it over heated. Damage has been done. Nothing less than a new engine should be the outcome. Make sure it's noted in writing on the dealers invoice that they installed the filter wrong.

Here is the instruction from the Owner's Manual:

5. Install the new oil filter with the ‘‘OUT- SIDE’’ mark (8) facing out.

The Honda Dealer workshop should have a workshop manual, I would have thought. The instruction is clear enough, but in my experience a lot of Thai people are not good at following even simple instructions. The shop screwed up; it is for them to sort it..... Don't worry, I am sure they will.

There is a guy in India who had the engine in his CBR250R replaced under warranty, then rode off on a several thousand km trip only a few weeks later.

I agree with the others that internal engine damage was done. If you look at the Honda CBR250R/RA Service Manual (Section 3, Page 15) there is a Note: Installing the oil filter backwards will result in severe engine damage.

Here's the news flash, folks... Honda Motor Co. DOESN'T owe the OP an engine, rather THE DEALERSHIP that installed the oil filter backwards should be eating the cost of the repairs. Honda Motor Co. does not own dealerships, nor does it have any responsibility for, or control over what a dealership might or might not do in its service department. Thus, HMC would have absolutely no liability to the OP under the terms of the Honda factory warranty. In this case it's all on the Dealership.
