Default water pump cover is leaking a bit.

I took my bike down to the power sports shop to get some maintenance done on it and they pointed out that there was a bit of a small coolant leak that looked like it was coming from the return line on the motor. They said they tightened it down a bit and to keep an eye on it. Well I noticed the smell and the leak again. So I wiped the motor off and noticed the fizzy bubbles coming out from around the left top side of the water pump cover, not the return line as previously thought. It looks like there is a gasket there behind the cover http://www.hondapartshouse.com/home.aspx?gclid=CK7k5KbQq7MCFSWoPAodQwUAtg#/Honda/CBR250R_2AC_(11)_MOTORCYCLE%2c_THA%2c_VIN%23_MLHMC 411-B5000001_TO_MLHMC411-B5099999/RIGHT_CRANKCASE_COVER/CBR250R-11-THA-2AC/2Y14KYJBKYJ4E0600B

number 14 (19226-KYJ-901). The dealership is over two hours away and I don’t have the time to take it there. I was thinking of replacing it myself. My question is this, is Honda using a gasket sealer on these gaskets and if so what do you recommend. Also I know I should get the shop manual but does anyone know the TQ specs for the bolts on the cover?

Mine did the same thing, snug the bolts up on the waterpump cover and it should be fine.

The dealership pointed out the same problem to me during my bikes first service. They replaced the water pump gasket under warranty.

Aww the joy of old problems. This is not a major thing but due to having a motor that now has a bit of dirt on it you can tell the small leak is coming from the water pipe #10 under bolt number #19 and slowly dripping down and wresting on the water pump cover. I am wondering if I should just buy the washer o-ring number # 31 and try to replace it with a new one.

The leak is small but I have more long distance miles to rack up this summer.
I have been staying on top of the leak via the overflow tank and yes the bolt has already been tighten down.
If any one knows what the proper tq specs for this bolt is I would be thankful to you for your input.

I would... I'd replace both o-rings for the coolant pipe.

Honda doesn't call out the torque spec for that specific bolt, however they list the standard torque value for the 6 mm flange bolt (8 mm head, large flange) as 12 N-m (1.2 kgf-m; 9 lbf-ft). Just like the oil filter cover bolts, easy does it when tightening them. I wouldn't even use a torque wrench on these bolts, unless you have a very good quality 1/4" drive unit that is accurate. Otherwise finger tight, then a bit more with a wrench should do it.

I wonder how full this line is when the motor is dead cold. I dont have my bike in front of me right now to trace the cooling sequence. It only leaks when the motor is warmed up.

The entire cooling system is full with coolant. You'll have to drain it as much as you can before removing that tube, otherwise you'll just end up with coolant all over the place. I think the place to start for draining it would be the right side radiator hose, where it attaches to the water pump... you should be able to recover most of the coolant into a clean container by draining it there.

The lowest bolt in the water pump housing is designed as a drain bolt for the system and has a sealing washer for that reason. When refilling make sure the air is bled from the system. ( Basically fill to the top of the radiator cap, run for a few minutes and rev the engine a few times, top up the radiator and fit the cap. Top up the reservoir to the full line.)

I agree with the comments about not over tightening the bolts. Getting them tightened evenly is more important. Honda don't specify using any sealant on the rubber 'o' ring type gasket my personal preference is a bit of rubber grease spray but that just to help it seat evenly.
