I guess this question just got a little bit more interesting with Honda's announcement in a week or so.
There are going to be riders interested in the 500. I personally feel that after a season I will be looking again at the 600 ss bikes again. If the 500 is at this yrs bike show I will certainly take a look. I suspect the 500 will fall into the sport touring category in which I am not interested. This weeks announcement is not news to me.

What do you mainly use your bike for LTR? If it's for weekend fun, then I think that a SS bike will be ideal for you. If it's for every day transport, or long distance riding, you'll soon get fed up with it. They're usually bloody uncomfortable after half an hour or so.

Looks are subjective, my feelings are the R1 and R6 are the ugliest bikes of the lot.

don't rely on ABS, supersports don't even need it

I was actually referring to the new 600rr, should be interesting to see what they have done with it. May make you're decision easier or more difficult.

yeah, the 500 will be a cheap, lackluster, commuter motorcycle with nothing going for it

I would disagree. On wet ground ABS will almost always do a bit better, especially in the hands of a novice. But on dry pavement, I agree, all supersports can stop on a dime.

I think a lot of people would disagree with that. I am personally looking forward to the 500. Not saying I will get one, but if I were going to upgrade it will likely be the 500 because I dont want a ss and I dont want a bike thats too heavy like a ninja 650. Between those bikes the 500 should fit nicely.
