Thumbs up Electric Powered Motor Vehicles are on the rise...

Electric Vehicles have been on the up and up within the last ten years and with the recent production releases of up and coming All Electric Vehicle manufacturers such as Brammo and Tesla Motors, these companies are beginning to match and in some ways surpass gas powered engines.

Tesla recently released their newest Vehicle the "Model S" which can get up to 300 miles on a single charge, has innovative features, can be used in every day situations, has carrying space in both trunk and hood compartments, stylish/innovative designs, can even beat a BMW M5 in a quarter mile in just ONE gear, and can fully recharge while you sleep or work. The Model S has wowed the car industry.

As Tesla leads the future of Electric powered cars, the folks at Brammo have released their newest All Electric Empulse which can get up to 100 miles on a single charge. Their future tech is being tested on their Empulse RR (which can compete with the 600cc class!), I think it's safe to say that Brammo is leading the way for all electric motorcycles.

If this is what is available now, imagine what we will have in the next 5-10 years! Now if Tesla and Brammo would just join forces, then that would be a vision to behold.

Imagine no more gasoline smells, spills, fires, little dependancy on recharge stations and NO MORE dependancy on gas stations, no more stalling, oil changes, valve checks, start up difficulties, noisy exhausts, inconsistant engine performance, and other problems involving Gas powered/combustion engine vehicles.

Of course there are reasons why electric only vehicles haven't caught on yet and the two biggest reasons are Price and Recharge time. These are valid points for the time being, but as all new technology, it will be improved, it will become cheaper, and when it does, there will be little excuse.

Some may say that they love their gas engines, the sound their exhausts produce, the jobs that the required services create, and other old inefficient practices of the past 100 years. You can hold on as long as you can, but the future is here and right around the corner and there is no turning around from it.

Others will be in support of hybrids, but really the only use of hybrids is to extend range and have a backup power source incase one of the engines fail.

I am a supporter of progressing all things to a better state.
After finding out about Tesla and Brammo (and others), I am convinced that my next vehicle will most likely be electric.

In the wake of the reveal for Honda's new 2013 model bikes, if not a single one of them is electric or hybrid, I will be disappointed in them. They have a lot of influence in the industry and could really change the game for all players. Playing safe and waiting for someone else to do a triple backflip before you try, is not progressive. As for Harley Davidson... if they don't change, they will end up going the way of the dinosaurs sooner than later.

I think I have an idea for where I want to lead my future and its quite shocking.

What do you guys think? Oh and heres a bonus video to of some nice electro music for your listening pleasure!

I'm up for it, though I'd miss the noise from a combustion engine. I hate it when those electric scooters and cars sneak up on you; you hardly hear them in a busy city. Range should increase though.

Electric vehicles are 3 times more energy efficient than gas and use a renewable energy source but are still way too expensive or too short in range. As long as there is cheap gas, plug in electrics will be on the fringe. I keep wanting to build a conversion motorcycle but the biggest battery pack you can squeeze in is 72v/ 100Ah which would cost $3500 and give barely 80 miles range at 65 mph and 300 mpge. The rest of the motor and electronics and a six hour charger would be another $1500. I commute 15,000 miles per year on my CBR250R and get over 90 mpgUS. At $4 per gallon that is $666 for fuel. At $.16 /kWh for electricity I pay from the wall, I could save $300 per year on a 300 mpge electric motorcycle which would barely pay for a new battery in 12 years. Barely a wash. If gas was $9/ gallon as it is in Europe, and electricity stayed the same, I would save $1200 with a plug in and it would be more compelling.

I like the idea of electric vehicles, but I think we often overlook some of the downsides:
- transmission of electricity from energy source to the battery always results in some efficiency loss, as does the battery losing power as it sits.
-Generating electricity often comes from a combustion process, so electric power is not necessarily renewable.
- electric vehicles are not "emissions free". The emissions just occur "upstream" at the power plant. (Although it is fair to say that power plants are more tightly regulated than all those individual combustion engines on the roads and in garages.)
-The batteries have relatively limited life, compared to current components on traditional cars and bikes, and are expensive to replace.
- Batteries often contain hazardous material that needs to be disposed in a safe and environmentally sound manner.

I LOVE the quiet of electric vehicles, although it does create some safety issues. But imagine how nice it would be if even half the road noise around us was eliminated!

And Sendler, you do rock, putting 15K miles/yr, especially in snowiest city in the country!

Plus 10,000 miles in the car when it snows. Too far round trip for a Leaf, MiEV, Zero or Bramo.

i too love the idea of electric. But at the moment i see them as only short range low speed grocery getters. Battery tech has to improve - they do not last as long as the marketing says. do not give the range that marketing says. the batteries are too expensive to replace.

In October 2010 i put an electric kit on my road bike (pedal). It was expensive (1800$) but used LifePO4 battery that (marketing) said would last atleast 2000 charges. So that was over 5 yrs at charging it every day.

loved the kit. was fun zipping around town. stock speed was 32kph but i had it derestricted so speed was 45kph. I never found out what the range was because my trips would be done b4 it ran out of power (trips were 20 to 60 km)

so sometime around April/May 2011 i took the bike back to the dealer because the motor started cutting out as i was riding along. The kit was under warranty for 12months. but they could not tell me why it was doing this. It was fine with a fresh charge but got worse as i went along. I thot maybe it was heat because of going too fast on hills (over heating the controller)

so come November 2011 (warranty over) with the problem getting worse and worse. Could barely go 2 km without it cutting out. The dealer says it is a bad cell in the battery and they would be happy to sell me a new battery pack for $800

so after a year and approx 300 charge cycles (so much for the minimum 2000 ) the battery was toast. Did not buy a new battery and removed the kit shortly after.

I'd love an electric off road (not MX) bike. It would be fun to sneak up on the deer, turkeys etc. Might be a little dicey with the bears though.

I'm also interested in electric conversion for motorcycles. If the cbr250r engine ever dies or needs a rebuild I may just go ahead and give it a shot. I came to the same conclusion as sendler, too expensive to do a conversion right now.

I know my friend says ninja 250's need an engine rebuild right around 60,000. May just be the right time to try it if gas prices sky-rocket.
