It does strike me as a bit of an urban legend, but I've seen stranger things here in Dallas, TX. Stuff like this is one of the reasons why I went and got my CHL last month. Granted that if they're going to roll up behind me and shoot me it won't do much good, but otherwise I have a reasonable chance to do something to defend myself. Especially since I go to work at 2AM in the morning and there are a lot of crazy people out at that time.
I just don't get the point behind something like this.
I'm in Texas too, in Arlington. Why would a car club member ruin his/her pretty car running down cycles? Besides here in the "Republic" of Texas they hand out life sentences like the are Del Taco coupons, not a wise thing to do.
Life sentences?!? If they're lucky! They're just a likely to get that free Last Vitamin Booster while strapped down to that stainless steel cruciform (especially if they're an indigent minority...)

Fellow Texan, motorcyclist, and gun nut here. I always carry my gun in my car, don't have a CHL (pretty much useless, anyway) but I was wondering if the whole keeping the gun in your vehicle thing is legal with motorcycles?
I doubt it, Brooks. And I'd hardly call a CHL useless. I can basically wear my gun on me anywhere that doesn't post an official 30.06 sign, AND out of my last six traffic stops, I only received one ticket. It's not officially a ticket-deflector, but I do think that if a cop is on the fence about whether to write you up, the CHL tends to push toward the "no" side.

Maybe you. Personally, even with a CHL I cant carry into a bar, a school, my work (due to workplace policies), or any event with over x amount of people (I dont remember how many).
Pretty much the only place I can carry that I couldn't before is Wal-Mart.
I'm not sure why it is you think that a cop will be leanient on you because you have a license to carry a weapon. If anything, I'd think it would be the opposite. You think the police like dealing with armed individuals?
I'm not sure what you mean about Walmart. If you have a CHL, you could always carry there (unless they posted a 30.06 sign, which I never saw.) If you don't have a CHL, you CAN'T carry a concealed handgun ANYWHERE except your own property or inside your car. True, most bars and schools are off-limits (as they should be) and they post appropriate signage. And Six Flags. But I wasn't taught anything about events with x number of people being a no-no.
Do you understand the Texas CHL process? Most cops seem to. They realize that in order to get one, I had to undergo instruction in the law and legal use of deadly force, hands-on weapons qualification, and extensive criminal background checks on the local, State, and Federal level. They understand that I have never defaulted on a Student Loan, nor have I been convicted of anything more serious than a traffic violation. I've had my fingerprints run and my names, residences, and aliases (if any) studied going back 10 years.
In short, they understand that holding a Texas CHL identifies me as one of the GOOD GUYS.
More than one LEO has explicitly expressed approval of my CHL and my choice of armament. Like I said, it's not a get-out-of-ticket-free card, but I truly believe that without it, I'd have six more moving violations on my record.

Sounds like a good policy. Maybe I should move to Texas?

No, they don't like it. The one thing a CHL does do, though is it shows that you have undergone a background check and therefore you are not a bad guy. It says, "yeah, check my record, I'm clean, I follow the law, my gun is LICENSED, I've got nothing to hide."
But I would bet most cops don't see it that way. We're untrained vigilante cowboy loose canons.
But in reality, in 14 years of infantry life and a 12 month deployment to Ar Ramadi, Iraq, I probably have more gun handling and life or death experience than they do.
