Well, when it's cold, they turn on the heater, and it burns gas to keep them warm.
Of course, you and I live in climates where oranges grow,
so we don't need to worry about things like that.

P.S. I didn't know about the difference in MPG either,
and I have ridden all winter in Canada for twenty winters.
I guess I was more concerned about getting inside than
about the figures displayed on the gas pump.
P.P.S. finally addressing OP's concerns. I have ridden on lots of Ontario highways, and the suspension
of the CBR250R is surely adequate for dealing with frost-heaved pavement. I have the same birthday
as Wisconsin, except I am a few years younger and a lot more wrinkled.
