On the Chop Cult forum they dont have the spam problem because of a basic application for memebership that asks for details about how you heard of the site, also asks for model of your bike and any project bike models. Then app is approved by a moderator. Might be a tedious process for mods but it would probably turn away spammers pretty quickly.
