I see that you are an erudite student of the English language.
I am a teacher. For homework please do the following:
1- Read the works of William Shakespeare, and the Oxford Dictionary, with special attention to words and phrases like "pun", "satire", "irony", "taking the Micky" and "political correctness".
2- Practice reading between the lines.
3- WatchThe Life of Brian, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, and a few James Bond movies.
And mind you don't sneak off to read Mad magazine or watch one of those dreadful American sitcoms.
You can leap the fence to check out the world outside your backyard, if you dare.
I finished a bit of marking and recording for the real world over the past little bit. Now that's it for my online virtual class. Time for some lunch, then a real class full of groans and giggles.
1. Have Read: Othello*, Macbeth*, Hamlet*, Henry V*, A Midsummer Night's Dream*, Anthony & Cleopatra, Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew*, King Lear***, The Tempest****, Julius Caesar*, Romeo & Juliet**, The Merchant of Venice, and probably a few more that I cannot recall at the moment. *= also Have Seen the stage and/or screen adaptation **= also have seen the stage AND screen adaptation along with the ballet and West Side Story on the stage and film. *** = Also have seen Apocalypse Now **** = Also have seen Forbidden Planet.
2. Practice saying what you mean and not running for the "I was being ironic defense" Incidentally, scroll back and notice that I was one of the first to say that your topic was probably sarcastic. It was only when I read your later posts that certainly seemed to defend your position that all proper women SHOULD ride this way that I raised the question...which you have since, belatedly, answered.
3. Own: Life of Brian, Fawlty Towers (complete series) and Holy Grail on DVD. Also own: All Sean Connery Bond films on DVD. Also own (satires): Duck Soup, A Clockwork Orange, This is Spinal Tap, and Dr. Strangelove.
I have a pretty good grasp of humor and satire when it is well written or told, Mikey. A misunderstood comment is more telling of the quality of the writer than it is of the reader.
Oh and I'm available anytime you want to whip it out and compare the size of our.....reading lists.

Had to get away to see what we could find
Hope the days that lie ahead
Bring us back to where they've led
Listen not to what's been said to you

I just love it when holier-than-thou pedants take themselves, and me, way too seriously.
Yes, Empty Sea, you probably have read far more erudite tomes that I ever will. Does that make you feel better?
Most of my reading these days is the efforts of young people learning English as a second language, and a lot of that is proof reading to help them get their language right. I don't pass an assignment until it reaches a certain standard.
They are a good bunch in general. Like me, most are the offspring of peasants, and I have the utmost respect for them, and the variety of religious and cultural backgrounds they come from. However, also like me, even the most proper, modestly clad Muslim lass is capable of being delightfully irreverent at times. Thankfully, they have not been infected with political correctness.
Oh, and over 95% of them ride motorcycles, and most are competent in the decorous skill of sidesaddle motorcycling either as a pillion, or when carrying a pillion.

Bless his soul, I know the righteous one is well meaning...... and he does make for a lively thread! I have done my share of pushing his "Thanks" rating up.; I'll add another.

More women ride in Asia than in the Western world. I fell Mikey was sharing some interesting photos with his new 21st century camera. Personally I cld never ride side saddle since I wld crash in the first second....that's if I cld successfuly balance the bike in the first place lolol
No hidden messages, and I am enjoying my new toy. I just tell or show it like it is (albeit sometimes slightly provocatively, I know), and let others interpret things as they like.
Of course, sometimes it is fun to leave things open to interpretation......

She drives a City (basically a small Honda Civic), but hates driving in traffic, which is a given 90% of the time in the province. Most of the time, she's forced to be there because she usually brings her parents along and they ride the sidecar. She does it because she's "not comfortable in that position behind someone she doesn't know," but she's totally comfortable sitting in that position when I'm on the hot seat.
This is pretty much what the title of the thread suggests, just that my choice of words was a bit different, as SDM points out.

Not saying they are better or worse then we are.
To each their own, as long as they stay safe.
"Between their thighs" probably gets people a bit excited too.

I have said that ATGATT is fine sounding nonsense.
Polishing your halo and going ATGATT then riding like a daredevil is tempting a date with the Grim Reaper.
Motorcycling is dangerous. Motorcycles don't have the passive safety features that modern cars have, and never will. Gear can help, but attitude and awareness are more important. Safety comes down to assuming and managing the risk.

Well said, but I had better let the blowhard have the last say. He prefers it that way.

Not only that but he also said that it is unseemly for a women to ride in the normal riding position. Neither comment included mentions of cultural norms or economic neccessities. I also fully understand that not everyone can afford proper riding attire, but Michael, in reply to a new rider who was asking about proper gear, informed us that he rides in shorts and sandals. He did not, at that time, mention any economic constraints and in any case should not have implied to that poster that sandals and shorts are safe attire. It may be the best a person in a thrid world country can get, but that doesn't make it safe.
It is very interesting to learn about motorcycles in emerging nations, but safe is safe and sexism is sexism and neither should be put forth as "proper"

"This old engine has a nickels-and-dimes sound to it. As if there were a lot of loose change flying around inside. Sounds awful, but it's just normal valve clatter. Once you get used to that sound and learn to expect it, you automatically hear any difference. If you don't hear any, that's good." -- Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

aside from whether or not 4 people and a cage of chooks can, ride a motorcycle,
or whether or not people can ride backwards, sideways or on their heads,
the pivotal concept is whether they 'should' because, they are female..
what then of females who wish to ride motorcycles as they are designed to be ridden,
with the thighs parted both sides of the tank, pressing into the seat and tank,
pelvic floors [heaven forbid] exposed to seat and tank pressure/vibrations..
obviously, women who are 'proper' should not ride motorcycles...
tell that to the charming independent young women on my motorcycle course,
with her very short hair and excellent japanese tattoos..
she would look at your brain via your optic nerves as if looking
into a half empty garbage bin of stale smelly leftovers..
it was once not 'proper' for women to have jobs,
or drive cars, or smoke cigarettes, or chew gum,
or express an opinion strongly, or enjoy sex
[or even know, what a g-spot or orgasm are]..
never mind run for election or be astronauts...
all of this is cultural conditioning
old name 'brainwashing'..
a good thing, of course,
for some...
so happy new year, for all
to whome that is proper
