I don't mean anything like elitist rule. A republic is rule by law, a system of government. Democracy is a specific process of majority rule. I'm actually saying that law should stop elitists, and majority for that matter, from taking away the rights of the minority. Slavery is subjecting someone to involuntary rule. The opposite of liberty. I would never support slavery, be it private ownership or totalitarian government.
I realize my efforts are in vain, but the argument has been joined, and I cannot let freedom go undefended.
You started this argument. This is your thread. And you made some really stupid arguments. And now you act like you were somehow just compelled to respond?
All you objectivists, I can't wait until you're old and sick and powerless. I'd like to see how far your bootstraps can lift you then. Of course, like Ayn Rand, you'll use your power of cognitive dissonance to convince yourself since you paid into the collective you should probably just go ahead and take your Medicare, complicit in the theft about which you spent your powerful days uselessly whining.
Nice video Rusty, but the link must have been broken - I didn't get to see what happened to the poor guy's kids in the end. You talk about choice? I didn't see the bit where they chose to be born into a poor family and not have the same opportunities as the other guy's kids.
That may be the case, but that still doesn't give you the right to take someone else's property. I talk about choice in what governing someone is subjected to and by voluntary interaction. No one is "entitled" to anything of anyone else's. Having the government do it for you doesn't make it any less of theft.

NSU, I know what you're talking about, and from a pragmatic standpoint, I understand. My point is that while central government makes sense for some things, I feel that with respect for individual liberty, it should be as hands-off as humanly possible. If I were a Libertarian congressman, I'd be realistic enough to work with people, but freedom is my starting point of negotiation, not social engineering via redistribution.
(For the record, if I were to support a collectivist form of government, I would go all out. In the US, I'd much prefer the Green Party over the Democrats. At least they shamelessly advertise what they're trying to do. In Obama's defense, he was pretty clear for a Democrat. "Big 2" candidates aren't usually that transparent.)

To all. Tax is not theft. Tax is what we pay to elected Governments who in a Democracy, spend it as they wish, hopefully, with the mandate of the electorate. If you didn't vote for the Government that spends the money contrary to your beliefs, you are in the minority. If you don't like living in a Democracy, you are free to leave, and go somewhere where you think your taxes will be spent more to your liking. Or wait until the next election, and try and empower a Government more to your liking. It does seem to me, that over many years, most Democracies have hovered around the middle ground of left and right wing politics, which in the grand scheme of things, is probably the best path that we should take, as a whole society.

Wah wah I hate taxes.
I said that the argument has been joined, and I am defending freedom. What about that is hard to understand?

The idea, NSU, is to have the funds, family, and friends, by the time you're old, to look after yourself.
