Hardest thing and proudest rolled into one, I was raised rather old school and I've tried to stick by my morals, values and ethics leading my life. It sends a though this day and age has little use for my mentality and way of thinking. Trying to stick by what I feel in my heart its right has been a hard battle when compared to trying to fire in with todays society. It may be different where everyone else lives but I know here it seems as though guys treat women as objects or as a temporary parking spot.... And for some reason women accept it and put up with it.

Sorry for the soapbox.

With safe regards from the mostly frozen north.

Doc is a name I earned as an Army medic, I spent 20 years dealing with life and death, on 3 different continents, I've learned dead in about 12 different languages. I seen more than a lifetime should ever seen about the brutality humanity can inflict on humanity, for that member that denies that PTSD is real, feel grateful that you don't have it. Have you ever had to try to hold the pieces of a 4 month old little girl's head together as you are doing xrays to document that the back of head was, indeed, flattened by the baby's father who didn't want to fix a bottle for, it took 3 weeks for her to die. Ever taken pictures of a 6 year old's head after his dad practised his batting till every bone in his skull was broken, mercifully he died enroute to the neuro-surgeon. Ever done CPR on your best friend for an hour and a half, unsuccessfully. Have you ever been driving down the road, hear a siren, and suddenly, you are on another continent, in the back of an ambulance, with a nonexistent patient.
These and numerous other dreams, no, nightmares, inhabit multiple times a week. When you can say you have done these and another thousand others, tell me that PTSD is not believable, until you wake up more tired than you went to sleep because you are literally doing CPR in your sleep, then tell me you don't believe in PTSD, by the way, there was no patient physically present. I don't believe in unbelief. Live one of my nightmares, especially prior to having to take a gamut of various drugs for schizophrenia, because they thought you were just crazy, then take mood altering pills because you must just be depressed! Then someone decides that you need to be treated for bipolar disorder. Finally, an air traffic controller that was at the scope and too late for a midair crash, tells you you've got the same thing as I do. We talk for a bit, because we were the only ones in the restaurant cause we both isolate, if there were more than 3 customers in the restaurant we would leave. She told me it was ok to sleep in a loft when you pull the ladder up and sleep with a .357 as a bed partner.
Now please tell me again about how much you don't believe in PTSD. I may not believe in the Tooth Fairy, but I do believe in PTSD!!!
Does everyone that has nightmares have PTSD, probably not, but everyone that has PTSD HAS NIGHTMARES. At least, until they get them under control, or at least manageable. Either with meds,or, as I tried with trips into bottles with no end.

Well spoken Doc. I too am a medic....20yrs, and have wittnessed similar experiences as you. Mankind can brutal. My battleground does not include war as in your career, however, my service area does require me wearing body armour for protection. PTSD is real! It's like a slow moving cancer that is capable of robbing the victim of peace of mind and quality of life. To infer it doesn't exist further demeans the victim, especially when such a statement comes from a non-professional.

True, ppl are entitled to their opinion, however such an opinion may be inaccurate. I for one have PTSD, and let me tell you, it blows. Almost every night i run through calls in my mind, questioning over and over again if i made the right decision, only to end up where i started. I see in vivid color every ped code. I feel and taste every sensation; including the salty taste of blood. I am an intelligent person who is not a mental whack job. Lets try not to be insensitive, especially regarding something a person may have little education on.

I wonder if the poster who claims not to believe in this condition is heading out on another deployment. Perhaps he is preparing mentally thus, one can not allow ones self to risk what he may perceive a mental weakness. Certainly understandable!

From now on Ill just keep my ******************** opinions to myself so I dont get swapmed by the social nazis.

Whether or not PTSD is an actual condition or not, Lowcard brings up the point that it is a common source of fraud in the military disability system. Which is entirely true.

I think that what Doktor is saying is that just because you haven't had PTSD doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, and I'm sure you're right that unfortunately, some people do abuse the system. I used to think that depression/stress was bullshit, until I suffered from it myself. Now, I understand.

And Lowcard quite aptly expressed his opinion. Perhaps some do commit fraud. Shame on them as their actions hurt the validity of those that are legitmatly hurting. Other posters pointed out that PTSD is a very real condition. Just as real as other veterans who came home amputees, bullet wounds, etc. Not all injuries are visible, but does not invalidate the mental and emotional trauma, which is not readily seen. Some topics on this forum require cautious response as we have no idea what others life experience has brought them. Empathy is a wonderful quality...don't you think?
