I've been awaiting the launch of the 2008(US spec) Lancer GT here for a while now. Mitsubishi has launched everything except for this one here. Might aswell go in for a Cedia(05 Lancer US) or the 2012 Punto. Two "Driver's car" with a rally pedigree.

To be really sure of what you wanna buy, always TD every car on your checklist first and then take opinions from people who own them. Always works for me.

I've had my Elantra since April. Getting close to 40 mpg consistently.

Default Mazda 3

I've been a Mazda driver for a long time now... Always loved them and they've only gotten better with time. The Mazdaspeed 3 is an absolute blast but doesn't get the MPG you're looking for and uses premium fuel. I'd say test drive it for shits and giggles.

I bought a Mazda CX5 which is a awesome little SUV that gets about 31 in the city and around 34-35 on the highway but honestly do mostly city driving.

Go take a look at the Skyactiv Mazda 3's and see what you think. They're pretty solid and reliable cars for the $$. As you can see I'm pretty biased with the Mazda brand... ahhh the new 6 looks sexy too.

How about a vw gti? New base models can be had for $22k. Plenty of get up and decent mpg. Mixed use I get 28-30 mpg. Straight hwy runs I can get 33+ mpg.
