Here's my thought on your point above (because it's how I used to feel). I love my 250, but admittedly I want a little more kick from that engine. A great example of where the CBR250R needs to be, power-wise, is the Ninja 300 (dyno'd at 35). That said, I'm not a Kawasaki guy I'm a Honda guy, and I'd prefer to stay that way.

As much as I've drooled over the 600rr, unless I'm on the track (no immediate plans for that) I will never, ever be able to use all that power (that I'm paying thousands of extra dollars for..) out in the real world. If I try, I'll either end up 1) in jail, or 2) dead. I like being able to wring out all my gears. Try that on a supersport and you're nailing 120mph in 3rd gear. Yup sounds cool, but see reasons 1 & 2 above. Just my personal opinion for my own needs & riding goals.

And here's where the 500 line comes in. I get to actually use the extra power that I've paid for - its not too little (22)... it's not too much (105)... it's just right (48).

MSF Instructor message that stuck with me: It's way more fun to ride a smaller bike at 80% than it is to ride a bigger bike at 20%.

Anyone else notice the screw-in external oil filter on the CBR 500? This is definitely a plus for me, since I change my own oil on all my vehicles. I took a screenshot that's zoomed in, check it out:

I personally am very interested in this bike. Our motorcycle insurance really goes up once you go above 501cc so I see this bike as a good starter bike that will be good on gas and cheaper on insurance but still have decent power that I will be satisfied for awhile.

Intelligence - nice to see. Riding a supersport on the street is pure wasted potential. Fine if you want to do it, but I'll take the lower entry price, the lower insurance, the increased mpg, and increased FUN FACTOR that comes with wringing speed out of a bike instead of rolling around at part-throttle all the time.

Now, as a track bike, I'm all in for supersports. Buy as much as you can safely use, and enjoy the hell out of it.

re:screw on oil filter. nice to see and looks like you do not have to move/remove plastics to get to it.
I am still not too sure about this new 500 (470) one deal breaker is the insurance tier. The next more expensive tier is at 401cc to 750cc so a 650cc and a 470cc would cost the same. so a 650cc maybe be a better option (SV650-FZ6R-CBF600)

@CraigCBR

I got you point and I truly agree with you. But many factors out there on how you will use the bike. Yeah a little kick on the 250 and that 500 is perfect. I would say that's a CBR250 on steroids.

But for some, they want to experience the power of supersports. It's not about on how to maximize it's full potential but the joy in brings. It really depends on the person who will use it.

$3-4000 *is* something I could talk my wife into, $8000 for a 600cc <insert random bike> is not.

Went to Honda 'bigwing' today. Official Honda big bike dealers are called 'bigwing' in Thailand.
Talked with one staff there. It was a different staff from my previous visit a month and half ago.
He told me that they will definitely start to book the bikes at the Bangkok Motorshow starting from 29th of November.
He told me that they will start to hand bikes for the first customers a couple of days after motorshow like 11th or 12th of December

After a long talk he let me write my name on a list and promised me big like he will put me on top at motorshow so i can get my bike right away. I dont need to worry etc. And came down and check and praise the mods on my cbr250
He refused to get a deposit bc he claimed like his boss - boss of bigwing -have not fully set/decide the prices yet.??? wtf
I ll see him on 29th of November afternoon at Bangkok Motorshow and check the progress one more.
It sounds too good to be true a little but we live with our hopes, right?
I fell like i will get one 'cbr500 abs red' soon maybe on 12th of December

WORD!!!!!
This guy totally gets what you're saying here:
2012 Honda CBR250R vs. big bikes - YouTube

On the freeways, Unless i wanted a speeding ticket every day, i wouldnt want to be speeding at over 100mph when the 250R has no issues doing a 90-95mph anyday.
Second of all, on the twisties, the smaller bikes are anyday more fun to ride on than the larger bulkier siblings.
It is always fun to push your bike to the limits than to limit your limits to the limits of your bike.. If you get my limits
Besides With gas prices soaring high every 2 months, I'm going to have to drop my idea of a 600 supersport and might eventually end up on this economical 500R soon. Unfortunately 600 Supersports arent legal here and thus we have no choice when it comes to used bikes either.

In accordance to my question posted a while back in this very thread, heres an interesting news as to why the 500R is a bit on heavier side.

KTM Duke 390 will be restricted to 40hp to get into the A2 license segment in order to meet the set power to weight ratio rules.
