only smash in lifelong motorcycling was at low speed
thru a quiet country town, double yellow lines,
when car did a u-turn right in front of me from curb,
without blinkers, without turning front wheel first,
over double yellow lines at end of a traffic island..
superman... landed on the road after flying over him,
[apparently, i remember nothing].. police measured skid
marks, said i must have fantastic reflexes, but had 'no chance'..
point being, i was wearing an old half face helmet id picked up
years before.. main injuries, depressed fracture left cheekbone,
fractured [snapped in two] left mandible [lower jaw bone]
small 'crack' in left eye orbit.. [jaw wired for 3 months
eating 'baby food' thru gap in back teeth, which if not there
already they will create by pulling teeth, in case you vomit]
point as to gear; had i been wearing a full face helmet,
i would not have sustained the multiple left side face
bone fractures as the result of my face hitting the road..
again, it was quiet, slow, uneventful, close to home
[navy base] i wasnt in a hurry, yet as an already
experienced rider [on my third honda, a 750/4]
with habits such as watching parked cars for
front wheel movements etc..
as the police report stated; 'but he had no chance'...
needless to say, from then on i always wear
a full face helmet, even if i ride around the block..
but then again for all those who prize their personal
liberties at all costs, its fair to say that before helmet
laws here i used to ride to the beach often without
any helmet, and never got caught..
i also prize my personal liberties..
but from experience i also prize
having an intact head and face
as a higher personal choice...
