What the gear?

On preparing for my MSF safety class I was looking at basic gear. There are so many different types and prices my head is spinning with all the options... I know typically you get what you pay for but...

My question is is someone who is new to all of this are there certain brands of things I should avoid. such as bad quality type items. What types of things should I look for? What are must haves? Considering all the new expenses involved I'm trying to keep it within a good budget so I would prefer not to spend a boat load of money.

Everything that fits.

Helmet, gloves, jacket, pants, boots. Roughly in order. Helmets are better with Snell but okay with just DOT. Armor is better if CE rated.

As much armor and leather as you can afford on the jacket and pants. Shop to those specifications as much as possible within your budget.

thanks for the tip on the helmets I noticed most of them are DOT it's just crazy how prices can vary so greatly for example a pair of gloves can range from 10 dollars to almost 200 dollars. when I went to the store Cycle Gear here in Orlando I noticed they carried all the same brand for their items.

Prices vary quite a bit but high quality can be found at the middle range. Use online sites to shop around. There are also closeouts and discontinued sales that can slash prices substantially on high end gear.
