Attention - Password and Security Update

Hello all,

Over the next few days we will be implementing some changes to our forum password strength and password expiration policies. To make sure you continue having the best experience possible on the community, we regularly monitor the site and the Internet to keep everyone's account information safe. We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community. Just to be safe, we are implementing the following changes to improve security even further:

1) We are asking everyone to change their passwords (and will force a one time reset). Along with every user on the forum, new passwords will need to be more complex, and can't be simple words (sorry, you can't have "fluffy" as your password anymore!). Please use a password unique to this community. Reusing passwords can expose your account indirectly when other websites (Twitter, Linkedin, Badoo, etc) are compromised; and

2) Your passwords will expire on a 365 day basis. When you login on the 366th day, you will have to change it.

We'll also be sending out an email to users to let them know about the changes, in upcoming weeks.

Thanks all,

Helena

Do we wait for the notification, or can we change it now?

Darn, it wasn't easy to come up with "fluffy"!

Hold off for now. It's my understanding that this new password reset is currently in the testing stage (to make sure it doesn't cause other functional issues on the site), and that we will be notified as to when we should change our passwords. I'm guessing that if one were to change their password right now, it would likely have to be changed once again when the new password reset takes effect in the coming days/weeks.

Meanwhile, it gives us all a little time to come up with a new strong alpha-numeric password which, as was suggested by the site Administrator, should also be unique to your account here and not a password that you'll use for other internet accounts.

You mean, we can't use "CBR250R" as our password any more?!

10 digits, smalls, caps, numbers, and then a special character. To be changed every year. This way too much and completely unnecessary for a forum. The place is dead already since they decided to split the 300"s to a separate site. This will finish it off.

I agree, it's overkill.

Yep, too much. Many banks don't even require a password this strong. And changing it every year? Ugh.

I would have been happier if they would have forced a Google/Facebook/etc login. Then they don't even have to store passwords.
