Aftermarket exhaust illegal?

According to Two Brothers Racing under FAQ....

Q:Are aftermarket exhaust systems street legal?

A:No, a common misconception is that some aftermarket systems are legal while others are not. Currently no City, State or Federally approved motorcycle aftermarket exhaust system exists in the U.S. market. Our exhaust systems are for racing purposes only.

Is this really true? I am about to get my new cbr in under 2 weeks and I wanna have this exhaust ready for install at dealership. I was concerned about it being "too loud" to where I would get a tix.....

Will honda dealerships install this? and is it really illegal? how about the 87db at 2000rpm?
I dont want it to be loud, I could care less about the sound...I just want to get rid of the OEM pipe, I think its horrid looking, so I would not be opposed to buying a silencer with it.

This is my first bike, I will have a warranty, so how does the exhaust affect that, will it void the whole bike? I can get it done at the dealership

Noise pollution. Don't like them, but the shop will put it on.

They look stupid on your bike too, like some little dork put a racing exhaust on his 250. That stuff about increased power is just bs, if you look at their chart closely, it's not going to help your bike perform better. Any gains probably came from their computer controller, it makes the power choppy and glitchy up top. IMHO

You want to spend 500 on a piece of ****, go ahead.

adding power is not my concern...getting rid of the horrid OEM design is my goal, as I know many people on this forum are planning to do as well

Oh, yeah, they all have to get rid of that 'fugly' exhaust. The look doesn't bother me at all, but loud bikes are obnoxious to everyone. Sorry

Yea...im not doing it for the sound, actually im asking just how loud is 87db on the aftermarket compared to the stock (does anybody know the db on stock) because they sell silencers with the two brothers exhaust that reduces it by 8db, but then I can get rid of the ugly stock can...win win?

For me - I would be more interested in an aftermarket exhaust merely to save weight. Granted, it is an expensive way to save weight - but farkles aren't meant to be completely rational anyway. The bike would look better with an aftermarket exhaust too (in my humble opinion). I don't care if an aftermarket exhaust is even quieter and produces no change in power - I just want 10 lbs less on my bike. Add in a Shorai battery and I might be able to reduce the weight of the CBR250R by 15lbs.

Must just be me, but I like the exhaust. Of course I cant see it when Im riding.
You can always paint the heat shield. I wont since I like a little contrast on my black bike.

The manufacturers are in a bind. Increasingly strict noise standards forces the exhaust system to have more muffler volume to squelch the sound. So many street bike mufflers today are pretty UGLY (like the Kawasaki Z1000 !). Shoving more of the muffler underneath the engine makes the visible part more acceptable (like this year's Honda CB1000F, I think that looks decent for what they had to do).

As far as sound goes.. I personally don't like the sound of single cylinder motors (!). I'd prefer to keep mine as quiet as it came from the factory. Those motards running around with pipes just don't sound nice to me...

This is pretty much what my neighbor said about the exhaust on his car when I recommended he might want to look in to some thing a little louder for all the dear that live where we live. Well... 2 years later and 8 dear and three cars later

he still has not heeded my advice.
For me the sound is more of a safety issue. I might get something louder for that reason alone.
I am not advocateing for being annoying and too loud but chances are if my exhaust gets some notice then you know I am there even when you maybe talking on your cell phone. IF this helps me get back to my family at the end of the day then I am all for it.

Magnunson-Moss Warranty Act - Aftermarket Parts
enjoy.

"a dealer or manufacturer cannot void or charge for a warranty service based on use of aftermarket products unless a failure is a DIRECT result of use of the aftermarket product and they will have to prove how.
They also cannot tell you that you must use the factory filters etc. to keep your warranty, unless they are willing to give you those items FREE of charge."

Sounds to me more like he needs to invest in a deer whistle. I don't see how a louder exhaust would help him. Loud ass harleys hit deers all the time.

Funny how people dont hear fire truck, ambulance and police car sirens and air horns. But they hear magical pipes?
Out here by me all the guys who say loud pipes save lives dont wear helmets. Doesnt make sense to me.

No amout of sound is going to help if you are moving too fast for them. I can clear a whole field with one back fire out of my car. Deer whistle still work off of noise last time i checked.

Loud pipes save lives.. <--- total bullshit. Deer may be bigger idiots than horses. On my bike I have honked at them, and they will split in two directions one away from the road, one across the road.
I will try this next time I ride in deer country.

Even closed course pipes have a db limit today. still, not many are legal for street. I will change my pipe for weight mostly. the stock pipe is usually about 3x heavier. This is all vibrating off the motor. So the lighter pipe should not transmit as much vibration.

I am not complaining about the vibration, for a machine the cbr250 single is pretty smooth as far as I am concerned, and I like it better than my four cyclinders.

Beauty of living in Hawaii....No deer on the roads, and all year it is perfect riding weather!

What about volcanos? At least the rest of us don't need to worry about coming around a blind corner and riding into a sudden river of lava.

Noise yes, but it's the pitch. You can't even hear it, the deer does. It's a lot different from the sound of a exhaust, car or motorcycle.

I am one of the few I guess that also like the look of the stock exhaust, if I ever did change it it would be to make it sound a little meatier...if I could do that plus leave it looking just like it is I would be a happy camper
