Along the Turquoise Trail: Madrid, New Mexico
Madrid, New Mexico was established in the late 1800's as a coal mining town. Today it's a funky little town just south of Santa Fe, on what is known as "The Turquoise Trail". It's become somewhat well known as the principle filming location for the movie Wild Hogs. I was living in Madrid at that time, and for the month and a half that the production company was there making the movie the town was turned upside down, inside out, and "dressed up" to look nothing like it was before or after the movie was completed. Disney, which was the studio backing the movie, did leave behind some money for the town to use for upgrades to some of the public places, like the Ballpark and public restrooms in the main part of town. Oh yeah, I almost forgot... I did get to meet the actor William H. Macy. He was walking up the street on his way to the set one morning, as I was doing the same (I worked for a few days as a Stand In on the movie)... very friendly, personable guy who looked to be having fun making the movie. I said hello, and told him that I grew up in Minnesota and really got a kick out of the car salesman he played in the Coen brothers movie Fargo. He laughed and just went right into the voice of that character, saying "Oh jeez, what part of Minnesota are yah from then?". He and I went back and forth for a good, solid minute with the "Oh yah, ya betcha" and "Ya do any good wit da fishing up der at Mille Lacs then" dialect, much to the amusement of a few of the nearby film crew and a couple of bystanders. That was one of those priceless moments... very cool.

I believe there are a few NM CBR250R owners here... yeah setting up a ride up through the Jemez Mountains would be very cool. I did it a couple times last year, riding from Santa Fe through Los Alamos, and on to Jemez Springs for lunch. It's definitely a great motorcycle road. In fact I've talked to a few riders along the way who have done it as a big one day loop ride starting from Abq and going up through the Jemez from the south to Los Alamos, on to Santa Fe, and then back to Abq via the Turquoise Trail. Another good day ride would be going up to Taos, Angel Fire, and Red River, NM... I haven't done that one yet, but it's on the list.
