Clutch Slipping

Anyone had any problems with their clutch?

ever since the first service shifting seems like it takes much more effort from the bike , its not as smooth.

and also 4 or 5 times something has happened which sounds like the clutch slipping.

during sudden acceleration, when over taking someone in my case.
around 6 or 7k RPM the RPM's just rocket up for about a second then back to normal.

my problem with the clutch is that i sometimes cannot get off neutral to first. it's really annoying. sometimes i can go to second then first. when this doesnt work, i put the peg down and up again and might work. if not; bike of and on again (just like with the computer)
Getting into 1st

I've owned several hondas and this one has a little tighter transmission than most.

To get into first you may need to roll the bike backwards and forwards a bit. As the bike gets some wear on it you may not have this issue as much. When downshifting at say a light or stop sign just make sure that last shift is done before you come to a complete stop and you'll be set. First will be a loud clunk.

I have trouble getting into second sometimes while moving which is more embarrassing since I end up in neutral occasionally. I know this too will improve with wear on the transmission. I try and make a conscious effort to listen for 2nd and if I'm not sure just go again. This bike has enough torque to pull away even if I end up in third.

The clutch may indeed be slipping. It's probably not worn out yet, but needs an adjustment at either the lever or the engine. Mine engages pretty far out so it's in danger of doing the same. I'm going to mention it during the first service and let the techs adjust it for me.

Hope this helps.

Make sure the lever has some freeplay, (also look at the adjustment at the engine if it has one?.. ie the angle of the arm at engagement)
Keep synthetic out out of it for at least 12,000k's,
Put 20,000k's on it and it will only get better.

The best long lived motors are the tightest & noisiest when new.. look at Honda & Nissan cars...Honda, Triumph & Yamaha motorcycles... but thats a whole other story.
I've found the easiest way to get it into 1st from neutral is to slightly let out the clutch while pushing the shifter down into first. It's something I had to do on the MSF ninjas as well. Easier than rocking the bike, I think. Especially when in traffic.

Also, the reason it's hard to get into first isn't because the clutch is slipping, its because the dogs in the transmission haven't lined up perfectly to engage without some motion to align them. In a car, difficulty getting into gear is an indication of a bad master or slave cylinder in the clutch, but that's not the case with our bikes.

Another thing. For those having trouble shifting into 2nd, adjust your shifter peg down slightly to make upshifts easier.
Some time i have issues getting from N to 1st, and if i just let the clutch go all the way and then pull it in again, without fail, it works the second time.

I've had this issue with all 4 manual tranny bikes, including the 250r. Problems worse when tranny is hot. Solution is shift to the gear you want (probably N) BEFORE bike stops.
actually i have no problem getting into first.
i've just had the RPM's skyrocket at higher revs (7-8k RPM) which could possibly be the clutch slipping? im not sure

but yeah sometimes i do get into N instead of 2nd by mistake.

also.

what do you mean keep synthetic out?
what oil are you guys running?
i did my first service and they put in Semi synthetic 10w40

Theres a whole thread on it with differing opinions (I wont get into a blue here over it) and fully Synthetic is great for long term use at protecting metal components... but a new clutch can glaze the plates with it.

You're running semi synthetic.. thats fine.
Was just trying to cancel that out of your clutch slip issues.
If you have play at the lever and its still slipping, maybe its just new and not bed in yet.

works great, thanks!

i hold the clutch, put the shifter down and release the clutch until the click comes
Would stiffer clutch springs fix this issue just changed them on wife's cbr 125r like night and day now
