i think they just make sure nothing's come loose but you might want to tighten the chain as it's breaking in

It was a phone conversation? Then the shop is in the clear and any valve/valve-related issues that come up later are all on your dime. Honda isn't going to honor their warranty if you don't follow the maintenance schedule. Your call.

I also agree with w0rM & Brian. Tell the dealer to read the manual (and TSBs for the CBR250R) and then find another dealer who has a clue and isn't talking out his sphincter.

Most manufactuers want an early check on things like valve clearance - small imperfections in cast and forged parts will wear down/off quckly, and the likelihood of a significant change in adjustment is higher. Keeping the valves in adjustment will give you more power and longer engine life.

I agree with the other posters. Time to find another dealer if possible. If not, I would schedule the service anyway. If you're mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself, but buy at least one shim from the dealer (even if you don't need it) to assure that you don't have to argue later on.

My dealer also said the only thing you really need to do is change the oil and filter. I have had many bikes and have never had a 600 mile check up.

Same here, my dealer said only oil change is needed and this is a Honda Powerhouse dealer that said it. Think it time to find a dealer that read the owner's manual

mines getting picked up this morning
by my dealer for the valve check.
we are out in the boonies and they knew all about it.
even said lots of dirtbikes and atvs need the initial(similar drive trains)
check.better safe than sorry-mine runs fine
just doing it to cover my butt.
plus i really like my new ride and would hate
to have something wrong if i could of
helped it

took off alittle early because of the heat
just missed the dealer picking up my bike,seen him
about 2 miles from my house heading away.
they really have a nice setup picking up
bikes for service/looks like a dragster trailer setup.
and this was on my doorstep,called him and he said
we'll just settle up when i get my bike back TOMORROW.
filter and gasket,$7.17.
already did a change but just wanted my next change on hand.

There are many kinds of motorcycles. They are not all the same.
Seriously. I measured mine at 617 miles last Saturday. They are out of spec. To leave them alone until 16,000 miles is asking for serious trouble (well new valves and a valve seat job or head replacement at the very least)

My local bike shop hasnt even sold one yet and managed to tell me the Valves need checking at the first 1000km service, then not done again till 24,000.

Should be in your service maanual.

Steer well clear of any Honda dealer that says otherwise.

My dealer charges 150 for the first service. Spend the 150 now and save yourself hassle later.

Find a new dealer, id trust Honda over the dealer's advice on this one.

I read on a post somewhere that said 90% of the CBR250s don't need any changes to the valve clearances, but you never know if you're in that 10%, its like playing the lotto.

got it back today,runs smoother.
the intakes were close but the exhausts
were off alot.really glad i had it done.
now i have no worries and know i'm
good to go anywhere anytime with out

Well, that was the local shop I talked to. Not the dealer I actually got the bike from. I called the next closer dealer and set it up for this week. After I thought about it I agree with you all, better safe than sorry.

One thing I don't get though is why is not considered part of the warranty, instead of you having to pay a couple hundred $? It's not oil or tires, checking to make sure they put the engine together right should be on their dime...

Because where the dealer only makes maybe $500 off a new 250 (the PDI cost...), the $100 oil change that really only costs the dealer maybe $30 in parts and labour, adds up pretty fast... and keeps repeating itself over and over automatically.

I was looking at the paper my dealer gave me when I had my first service done...and they charged me for 3 quarts of oil??!! My bike holds less than 2!!!! Then they added another $13 for misc shop parts? wtf? My Honda powerhouse dealer isnt anything but a bunch of dirty little untrustworthy greedy fricken bastards.....so after the $140 for the valve check.. all together it was $270 .....Needless to say..they will not ever see my bike again untill there is something that needs to be done that I am not comfortable doing myself or the next valve check at 24k miles...which ever comes first

Could not agree more except my power house dealer is in Cool Springs.

I just called another area dealer that is a bit further away and he quoted me that he would do the valve adjustment and first service for $275. No appointment needed and same day service if it was there cold by 11 AM. i will make that deal.

$275? I forget what mine ended up being but it was under $200. Or are you having them do the oil too?
