Strange I complained of this exact thing for months, as soon as I started deep cleaning/proper lubing the chain it amazingly disappears.

BTW, do ye guys always have it, or is there most of the time and disappears every now and again?

Sorry, it's a colloquialism, it doesn't mean to literally 'scrub' it. :D

I think I was the first person to complain of this noise back in January. For months it bugged me trying to find and solve it. Always at the same rpm 5400-5600. Sometimes gone, but usually there for around 80% of the time. Really annoying. Certainly doesn't sound like it's coming from the chain area. I even stuck clothe under the dashboard in February, but nope. It really does sound like it's coming from the top of the engine. The same as everyone else is now complaining about.

First time I properly cleaned the chain with a proper chain cleaner, and lubed it with a proper o-ring lube it completely vanished for a few hundred km. And has done so ever since, never returning for a long time afterwards. Which is amazing as the noise isn't coming from there.

Massive coincidence if so many other people have the same noise at the same rpm and it's something entirely different.

Strange that with all the experts that no one has found it yet. I mean the top of the engine isn't exactly massive.

it comes and goes on my engine.
Yes, strange. Same on mine.

I'm still not fully convinced it's from inside the engine.

I changed to a cheap full system pipe for two days and the bike was visibly vibrating more (windscreen and mirrors), and the buzzy rattling sound was worse than usual.

Perhaps it's some part around the front of the bike that vibrates at those harmonies.

Anyone strip off all the plastics and dash and ride it naked?

btw, when mine first started at around 500km and then got worse by 1500km and got the dealer to check it out, most of the rattle was coming from one of those little convex mirrors that you stick on the original mirrors to get rid of the blind spot. The actual mirror had come loose and was buzzing around in it's case at those rpm.

Took 'em off, but was still left with the much lighter buzzy/rattle that many suffer from.

Perhaps there's some component attached that becomes ever so loose around the front area that vibrates.

Someone really needs to strip the bike bare and test it with nothing but the engine and the frame.

That sounds pretty vague, and is a crap excuse tbh.

That the engine isn't happy at that RPM so makes a loud, buzzy, annoying rattling sound.

Doubt Honda will be printing that in the next broucher.

And still doesn't answer what exactly it is.

That's crap feedback from a dealership tbh, and it should be reported to Honda HQ that they're dealers are telling customers that the new bikes are making loud, shitty noises because the engine isn't happy at particular RPMs.

Which happen to be in the middle of the rpm range so hardly fucking easy to avoid.

As far as I can tell the noise is not the engine but more likely something attached. It's either something like a clutch cable end rattling in it's holder or something similar. It's just that those RPM happen to be the most vibration prone. I can hear my valves and they aren't making the noise.
I agree.

But who's going to find it?

And can they do it kinda soon-ish.

Does it do it just free revving it to 6,000rpm?

or just under load.. if under load.. put 20,000k's on it and cane the ring out of it.. Its a Honda.
IIRC it's only when riding, not when free revving in neutral. I could be wrong on that but I'll check again next time I think of it.

btw, I had a full system pipe on for a week that caused more vibrations than usual (could really see the windscreen and mirrors vibrate compared to normal and 'the noise' seemed quite a bit worse, and kicking in at 4,500rpm instead of 5,500rpm.

Could someone take a video with sound and post it here or on youtube? I haven't got my bike yet and am very curious to know what this sounds like. Thanks,

Mate, do yourself a favour. Ask your dealers about it before you buy. Say that reports are that around half the bikes suffer from this noise, and that it is putting you off buying it until Honda rectify the issue.

My personal belief is that it is something connected to engine, not inside the engine.

When you're cleaning your chain, lift it up and really get in and wipe the chain-slider. It's isn't an easy place to get yer hands into, and lots of grit and sludge will be around in there. Spray it with WD-40 or similar and really scrub it clean. Repeat.

While yer at it spray your chain with a cleaner, wipe, put on a good lube.

Spray some silicone lubricant between the faring pieces, dash/windscreen pieces to ease friction.

The cleaning of the chain-slider really reduces these buzzes and 'engine' rattles.
