Have you outgrown the bike yet?

I'm thinking about purchasing a CBR250 and just wanted some of your opinions.

It's been over 14 years since I last rode,even then I only had a Rebel 250, so I figured I would start with a smaller street bike. I've stopped by my local bike shop twice and had the salesman tell me that I should start out with a 600 since I have experience and that I'll soon regret buying such a smaller bike.

How many of you feel that you have outgrown 250 and/or do you regret not buying a larger one such as a 600?

Maybe when I was a young fellow I felt I needed more power or whatever, but I don't recall it. Certainly now my attitude is to get what suits my needs (as opposed to my desires), and live happily with it.

And I have no time for smarmy salesfolk who go about trying to tell me what I need.

I may out grow it one day but right now it's hard to imagine needing anything faster.

I think not having the option to go to triple digits is probably a healthy thing.

well considering your the one with the experience,do you think you would get tired of a 250?have you operated a bigger bike?everyone is different and has their own personal preferance.

i cant say ive outgrown it.im comfortable with it though,power wise and know i can handle a bigger bike and i have ridden bigger bikes now,just dont own one...yet

a lot of these people "outgrowing" 250s,lets see how they do on the twisties lol.

I last rode a 955 Triumph Daytona, an R6 and a 1050 Speed triple and I havnt grown an inch since then.

There is a hundred other bikes between a 23hp cbr250 and a 100hp 600 supersport that is over 3 times the price and a totally different ballgame.. sounds like the salesman does not want a sale or just pushing for a bigger commission.

Yes.. just usually have to look at the chicken strips on their tyres.

No good havin flash shoes if ya cant run.

Go with a 600 in the long run you will much happier with it. The little CBR is ok for back roads but its not something you want you want to ride on the expressway all day. I have yamaha 600 and I can run it all day 70 75 easily.

As always, my opinion.....

Most experienced riders would tell you that even if you don't want to start (or restart) on a 250, a 600 is a bad choice. Most if not all of the 600cc bikes are highly strung - some of them are race bikes with headlights. As a result, they are very unforgiving of the throttle and braking mistakes that new or rusty riders often make.

Bikes like the Suzuki SV650 or Kawasaki Ninja 650 would be a much better choice to start with. Even though these bikes are higher in CC count, they have milder powerbands with lots of low end torque. In addition, the more upright riding position makes the bike easier to control, not to mention a lot more comfortable.

I love my 250 - I may upgrade in a couple-three years, but I really like the weight and handling of this bike. Even if I "upgrade", I'll probably keep it - it's just too much fun, and the mileage is really nice (especially with gas prices sneaking up again).

In my personal opinion, the salesman in question is irresponsible or trying to make a sale or both - but at the end of the day it's your decision. If you choose the 600, I'd take it very easy for a long time.

Commuter

This is the perfect high economy highway commuter/ basic transportation. I will never outgrow it. If you have more to spend and want more wind crushing weight, get a 650 from another maker. Honda also has good deals on leftover, 4 year old NT700 and Interceptors. If you have nearly the price of a new car to spend and want a canyon racer to ride wheelies on, get a 4 cylinder.

i agree with Luke.

the sales man was trying to get the triple
commision i think.one bike shop tried doing the
same to me.i just left when he would'nt shut up.
i've had bigger bikes also just dont need the speed
or that inhuman power generated these days
by the newer superbikes.
the ease of riding alone is worth the drop in HP.
and my forth fill up is still over 78mpg

I too havent rode in about 14 years...my first bike was a 250 also.....this is my 2nd...i dont regret getting it and not a bigger cc at all...maybe in a few years from now i might start craving more power....for now the cbr 250r is good enough for me...everytime i stop at a gas station........people come up checking the bike...

I really appreciate all of the advice from everyone. I too figured that the salesman was trying to up his commission, especially since there is almost a 8K price difference. I wanted to hear if from the horse's mouth vice a money driven salesman.

Headed down here in abit to drop my deposit for one to be delivered. I'll keep you all updated once I start riding.

The more I ride it, the more I want to ride it. This is one fun little bike, and you never get tired of fun. Plus, you'll never get a ticket doing 95...

I have not gotten my 250 yet but I'm in the "downsize" category. I have own two 883 Sportster ( '00 & '07). After looking at high gas prices, maintenance cost (really overpriced parts from harley), not to mention unreliable bikes, I decided to try something new and get a smaller fun bike. I do plan to ride this thing everywhere, of course if I go long distances I will avoid the superslab as much as possible.
When it comes to bikes, be realistic about your skills, you'll have more fun!
I definitely don't miss my old bike, it handled like a shopping cart,

If someone had told me that I was going to buy a 250 road bike a month before I bought the CBR250r I would of laughed in their face. I own ( and have owned) bigger bikes for many years....but one test ride and I put down my deposit ....the CBR250R is just plain fun to ride

However it really is "Horses for Courses" the CBR250R is a awesome sports/commuter, if there is such a thing... However, if you had to commute long distances at freeway speeds or your interests were more cruzing then buy a bigger bike.

Very well put! This is what I purchased mine for and have no interest in a larger bike. I may get a second bike for longer trips down the road, but I don't see that being anytime soon.
