While I was at a doctor's appointment today, somebody knocked my bike over in the parking lot. It was in 1st gear with a disc lock on the front.

I'm pretty sure they hit the bike with a car in order to knock it over like that, and there is some superficial damage to the exhaust cover and peg. I didn't spot any obvious more serious damage, but I don't think I'm really qualified to say for sure. Any suggestions on things I should check to make sure there isn't any damage I didn't spot?

As an aside, the business the bike was in front of got the license plate, and the whole thing is on security camera. I will be taking it to the police. I have absolutely zero tolerance for people who damage parked vehicles and don't leave their information.

Im really sorry to hear that this happened to your bike. What I learned the hard way is I have to be really careful about how close I park my bike to the lines because the car drivers are such idiots. Often times I will park on the sidewalk or some space off to the side, I rarely park in the normal parking stalls.

There are even vandals that will tip over your bike. I am very careful when around drunks because they are the main ones that do that stuff.

After a month of the insurance company and appraiser screwing around, they finally agreed on an estimate.

Bad news: They've decided to write the bike off.

Good news: They're valuing the bike at 75% what I paid for it back in 2014. I've also got partial coverage on my after market stuff.

So I'm probably going to stop riding for a year while I'm an impoverished student, and get a bigger bike. The NC700S is really intriguing.

They write off the bike for superficial damage from a tip over? o_O
What I do in that situation is I let the insurance pay me for the bike's value, then buy back the "totalled" bike from them at a discounted rate. Everybody wins, except your bike which will have a salvage title at that point.

It's unfortunate, but if someone does something that scratches my car or bike and I know it's just superficial or I can fix it cheaply, I don't even go through insurance. I just fix it myself because everything I have is at least 8 years old, and if a bird craps on any one of them, the insurance is looking for an excuse to write it off.

Sorry about the bike, but glad you had video evidence for justice. :)

Since the person who hit your motorcycle ran away, is it treated as a hit and run? I hope it is.

I've had a similar experience of being hit in a parking lot. I located my bike dead center in my spot, but a car next to me still managed to hit it and tip it over. Fortunately, the person who hit the bike did not run away. In fact, the person started to look for the owner of the bike within the coffee shop where I was at.

The bike that was damaged wasn't the CBR250R, so the value of the bike was actually quite a bit higher. Still, insurance decided to total the bike without even stopping by the shop to inspect it. I decided to buy back the bike from the insurance company. The amount they asked for the bike was reasonable.

Not sure how registering a salvage title in your neck of the woods works, but here in California, it was quite a bit of pain. I've had to get a DMV inspection, a third-party inspection, and countless trips to the DMV office which was the worst part, taking hours at a time.

I'm waiting to see what options the insurance company gives me. If I can get a partial payout and keep the bike, so much the better, but it really depends on what the new estimate included. The initial estimate they rejected was less than what they're saying they'll now pay out, so I wonder if they found something else wrong and nobody told me.

That's been the theme of this entire debacle. Getting anybody to tell me what is going on is like pulling teeth.

Further update:

I paid $3750 Cdn for the bike five years ago. The insurance company is valuing the bike at $2650 Cdn, and giving me another $940 for after market stuff.

A local dealer has a 2017 CB500FA with a carbon fibre muffler, adjustable levers, and a shortened fender for $4800. If it goes missing before I get the finances sorted out, brand new R3s are available in my area for about the same price after fees and taxes and other such nonsense.

So the lady who started all this is essentially subsidizing me getting a bigger bike, which I've been humming and hawing about for the past three years anyway. I'm frankly amazed at how well this is all turning out.

What a similar story to mine. I was also hit while parked, also at a doctor’s appointment, and also witnessed by someone who took the person's Plate. I called the police and my insurance and it’s not worth pursuing as my deductible is $500.

The damage is as follows:
- Left rear turn signal cracked
- upper rear outer fairing cracked

Unfortunately I’m having problems finding the exact parts for a reasonable price. Can anyone help? I think the part numbers are:
- 33650-KYJ-305 signal
- 83680-KPP-T000 outer white fairing

I’m in Canada and pretty much most of the sites that have these are nowhere near here.

Meantime, i tried removing the fairing and using epoxy tape and touch up paint to keep it looking fresh until I get parts. I could NOT get the inner fairing (the black part) off the bike and had to unscrew the outer fairing (white part) to fix it. Unfortunately putting everything back together was a challenge Because that’s also the side where the trunk lock is and there’s a little bit of play everywhere now. It was REALLY difficult to maneuver the tools and screws in tight enough and not being able to get the black part (inner fairing) off hurt my efforts for sure.

Any advice/ideas on how to keep everything nice and tight when I get the new fairing and eliminate play, especially near the key lock?

Also, in the process I broke one of the plastic push-in clips under the rear fender. 😞 which probably doesn’t help all the play I’m getting.

Anyone know the part number or where I can get those?

Last post on this - I promise

I think part of the reason I may have too much play is bc I was bending the fairing so I could remove the outer fairing from the inner fairing.

I have since watch a couple of race kit installation videos in which they take off the fender cover and then BOTH side cowls/fairings come off AS ONE PIECE!

Do you guys agree with this approach instead? Take both the left and right side off as one piece, replace the cracked left outer fairing, and put it all back as one piece?

I think this may solve my issue of accessing some of the screws on the outer fairing I couldn’t reach before while it was all still attached to the bike.

My concern is that by removing both sides,
I might be getting in too deep and unable to figure out how to get it back on afterward.

Check out Partzilla and buy OEM parts. Parts for this bike is very affordable, even when they are OEMs.
