Hey dudes, I recently got a CBR250R for my birthday and I was wondering about the laws that regulate usage of LED's on a bike. I want to put blue LED's on my bike, in hopes to make myself more visible. I was thinking something along the lines of:

Would that be legal in Dallas, Texas?

I'm still unclear as well honestly. According to Oregon state law, I think I can only have three headlights. I'm not sure exactly what constitutes a headlight though. I'm also wondering how bright my headlights can be. I'd like to swap out the three lights in the front and maybe add some LED's for better visibility.

Where I live in southern Illinois, an officer told me that you can have a maximum of two extra lights, and they can't be on the outside of the bike (ie they have to be in the fairings).

Whether or not this is the case in Dallas, much of what I have heard from other riders seems to indicate that it depends on if the police want to give you a hard time, like if you're pulled over for speeding it could be tacked on as an extra violation.

Here in FL you can have as many as you want as long as they arent emergency colors (red, blue or amber).

You should really google your state laws, BUT if like me you DID google the state laws and couldnt make heads or tails of it then do what i did.... just throw them on! Haha

I did see a few common threads on US light laws Emergency lights (blue and red) are a no/no, no flashing or strobing lights, and the only color that can be pointed behind you is red.

Ive got Red LED's under my rear fender, and inside my fairings (lighting up the engine) I also installed a toggle switch so i can turn them on or off at will (in case the po po are near me)

And if a cop pulls me over, i will very politley say i didnt know and hope for the best... Haha

patchwork of laws

Any jurisdiction may have its own laws, so go carefully if you go touring. For instance, in Ontario certain volunteer fire-fighters use flashing green lights, so the general public may not use them. If you never ride there, this won't matter to you, but then you will miss out on some terrific scenery.

I think you will be OK shining yellow lights onto your bike, or even onto the
ground, but I have not studied the laws of everywhere, and I don't plan to.

A parked vehicle, with its engine off, might be allowed more latitude,
but then again, you cannot guess what laws might exist in Idaho or Manitoba.

Lighting really bugs me, I work on a fire dept and there has been a few times on scene at night that you see flashing red lights and are thanking your angels because the ambulance is finally here... Only to find some stupid rice rocket come flying past.. End of rant :(

Call a local police station for non emergency questions. I got hold of the sheriff and got legal advice about all the mods I am able to put on the bike without any trouble. Come to find out their are light color and placement restrictions so just make sure you know the limits to what you can do. I currently have my LED glow kit installed and i havent been bothered by the law yet!

Good Luck on the mods!

Greetings from Seattle, Washington!
