Moto3 regulations allow 8 engines over the 18 race season. They also state that the price of a new engine cannot be exceed €12,000 (about $US 16,400).

Cheap at the price for a wold championship class racing team. I saw somewhere that the Hilton heiress is sponsoring one, all pretty in pink. However, a bit pricy for the average Joe just wanting to drag everybody off at the lights.
Interesting ! To get some rough figures, let's say that a fresh engine lasts for 3 races. I have no idea how long an average race is but let's say that a race is about 100 miles. There are lots of curves to slow down for so let's say that the average speed is 50 mph...

With these assumptions then the engine lasts for about 300/50 = 6 hours
After which it's no longer the high performance beast of it's former self...

The tuners and engineers knowing the race rules will design the engine system to perform at it's peak for just the amount of hours that it has to live...

Any hours more than that and you could have built more performance into the engine but you didn't and you lose. Any hours less than that and the engine craps out in the middle of a race and you lose.

To repeat a phrase that someone else nicely used in another thread, after the rated number of useful hours, the engine probably becomes "a grenade" :)
