Mounting GPS - Garmin Zumo 660 or 550

Anybody tried to mount GPS Garmin Zumo 660 or 550 on your CBR? How easy it is? How about wiring?

I think thinking about getting a GPS for y bike and need suggestions

I just received my Garmin 220 GPS from Amazon. I don't have the bike yet so I'm guessing.

It looks like the easiest way to mount the GPS is using the included mount on the left clip (handlebar) near the clutch cable bracket. It looks like there is space there for the u-bolt used on the mount. I may have to come up with something else when I get the bike in a few weeks. I'd planned on getting power from the headlight socket on the back of the headlight. It's on when the bike is on and goes off with the key. It's probably easy to get to as you need easy access to change the headlight bulb. I'll just have to see when i get the bike.

Let me know what you decide as I need ideas, also.

Maybe hooking it up to the headlight socket with a kill switch might be better so when your not using it it can be shut off rather than having it on at night and you have no use for it and save your battery!

You can turn the GPS off anytime with the switch on top of the unit.

could you explain (better with photo) where do you take 12 V exactly? I took out headlight socket, opened it but did not figure out how exactly connect to it, least invasive way. Wires going to the socket are really short.

Another way is to wire it to the battery, its easy to connect, but a lot of disadvantages:
- wiring will be more complex
- need a fuse
- risk to drain the battery by leaving something plugged when engine is not running.

Here's an H4 socket-

Just tap into ground and low beam (the light switch is usually on low beam most of the time on my bikes.)

Rather tham wire it directly and, perhaps, cause a warranty problem, I'll use something like this:

If you tap into the adapter wires instead of the bike's wiring, you can just remove the adapter and no one's the wiser. I found the adapter on the internet for $7.99 U.S.

You're welcome. I just found an adapter on ebay for $9.72 and went with that one. I should have it about the time my bike gets here, I hope!

I used a steering mount from RAM ( RAM-B-342U ) for my VFR. Remove the dust cover cap from the center of the steering stem. Looks like the CBR250R has a similar set up.

Can you provide a link to the one you purchased?

I found a few, but those which provide details indicate that they use 16 ga. wire. I'm wondering how that compares to the wires on the OEM harness (still waiting for my bike).

Seems like most harnesses now offered on eBay are in pairs (for dual headlight auto applications). Maybe some of you early experimenters have an "extra" harness you'd like to sell.

I'd really like to see a comprehensive "GPS Solutions" thread with detailed images, links to components, and instructions. If nobody posts something like that before I get my bike and figure out what I want to do, maybe I'll share the result in detail.

If you want an outlet, the Powerlet (used by BMW) is a lot better suited to bikes than a cigarette-lighter socket. Smaller, better connection, weatherproof.

Slide a sharp knife into where the black plastic and chrome nut meet - it will go in about 1/8". Gently pry the plastic up. It will go back into the hole with no problem if you want.
