yeah it would look funny... but man, it would be sweet for rear wheel maintenance.

I know someone on site welded a center pin to a car jack to lift the wheels up dirtbike style.... and Aufitt literally hangs his from the garage roof with straps.

I wld love any stand than the stock. It sits at a ridiculous upright position an judging by the amount of bikes that have been knocked/fallen over on this forum I think a more secure stand is in order.

I looked at adjustable rear-stands that sit the bike up on the little rubber pads as to not require spools; they start at $75. I need to get one for chain maintenance. I would've accepted a center stand on this bike if it came with one.

And removing the front wheel also. Centre stands are usually balanced so that the front wheel rests on the ground, but when you remove the front wheel, the bike rests on the rear.

This thread isn't just about me wanting a centre stand, it's also an invitation for others to say what would make your bike perfect for you.

My bike is perfect for me, apart from the lack of centre stand. ;)

I don't miss it either. The center stand was such an encumberance on the EX5. It was nice to have in a pinch, especially that one time when my chains jammed from a terrible mis-shift on my part mid-ride, but it caused a lot of drama when going over my complex's oversized speed bumps.

What I would like is a closed grab bar.

And actual mode and reset buttons, rather than the moldy rubber ones on there.
... an analog speedo.
... more canted rear view mirrors, like on the 650.
... retractable hooks.
... a hinge for the fuel cap.
... hmmm.

Retractable hooks or concealed nooks for attaching straps and bungie nets would make the bike the perfect commuter for me.

Adjustable suspension would make the bike the perfect corner Carver for me.

Considering the price of the bike I can't complain about the old school damper rod forks but bungie hooks could have been implemented into the design at very little cost.

Admit it Aufitt, what you want is the MD250H, painted in Spencer Blue Metallic. Then your CBR can go back to full time duty as a street legal bike. The best of both worlds.:)

I used to love center stands, now I'm thankful most bikes don't have them.

Most bikes (perhaps not all) are more apt to be blown/knocked over on the center stand than the side stand. Ours doesn't lean over far enough really on the side stand for it to be incredibly stable either.. but... thing is, when you use the side stand, your 3 contact points are very far apart and there is some lean to the bike, which helps prevent it from being 'blown over'. When you use the center, two of those contact points end up very close together and no more lean.

Plus, it reduces ground clearance, increases weight, and many riders, even on a bike like ours, don't understand how to get the bike up onto it safely. *shrug*

When I was riding my KLR, there were so many people who said they wanted a center stand, a company started making them. But on that bike, there was no way for the stand to fold backwards without causing suspension clearance issues, so they made it so it folded forward. Many a KLR rider has been catapulted off their aftermarket-center-stand-equipped bikes now because something caught the stand and pulled it down. No thanks!

How do I do it? I love tools, especially specialty tools. But I've never owned front/rear stands for any motorcycle. (I do have an ATV jack, which is incredibly helpful with many bikes, but fairings would have to be removed to use it with the CBR). I do things in creative ways, instead....

Notice the placement of the claw hammer? The back tire is off the ground because of that. This method doesn't work quite as well on the CBR.

Here's a pic of the vulcan with the back tire up... this one was a bit more challenging. jsonder, wasn't this sort of center stand your idea, I stole from another forum? :D

Worked great.

Not sure what I'll do for the CBR yet, I did my claw hammer method, which worked but was tricky, when I lubed the chain. Maybe it's time I just break down and build some real stands.

Hi DJ. Your posts are usually pretty factual so I have to ask, what bike is safer on a sidestand than a centre stand? I've been riding a long time and like you have owned a lot of bikes and I've never heard of any bike falling off a real properly fitted centre stand.

Back when bikes vibrated we would put bikes on their centre stands, start the engines, and see who's bike would bounce the furthest. I always won with my XS650 which would bounce about 30 feet backwards, in a minute. These were empty bikes and I never saw one fall over. It would take a REALLY strong wind to blow a bike off any centre stand I've seen.
Just curious!!
