Hello. I've been thinking of purchasing a 250r. The main reason is for fuel economy. I know Honda states the MPG is at least 70. What mileage are you guys getting? Also, has anyone had their 250r tuned for fuel efficiency?

Is there anything I should know about the 250r in general? Any known problems / design defects? Would you guys recommend this bike as a daily commuter with occasional highway trips? Can it handle a passenger? ABS vs non-ABS, etc?

Welcome to the forum. Ideally you should visit a dealer, have a chat, throw a leg over and go for a ride. The answers to the many questions you have asked can be easily found by using the sites search function.

The cbr250r is a gem of a bike but you need to experience it, and possible alternatives to make a useful comparison.

I chose my bike with the same intentions, and I fell in love with the 2013 CBR250R. No problems or defects that I have found yet.

I agree with DamianW.
I get an average of 75mpg / US gal., and I don't baby it.
Honda makes a great bike, and the 250 is a real value because it is such a nice ride for not too much moola...

If you have the chance, go to Fuelly.com & check out all the CBR250s. There you can get a whole lot of real world mpg stats on the bike.
You'll notice most average in the mid to high 60's while a few get high 50's and some get well over 70.
Use and throttle hand play a big role in the different figures.

Out on the highway cruising at around 60 mph, I usually get around 70-71 mpg (U.S). Cruising at around 65 mph, I typically see around 68 mpg. On some secondary paved roads out in the countryside, cruising at around 40 mph, I have consistently netted around 88 mpg.

If your priority is fuel efficiency, the CBR is the right choice. No other 250 can deliver such mileage. As others folks say, try sitting on one and find out if it's the one for you. Conmuting = CBR250R. Full Stop!!
