I just graduated last month and decided that I've been itching to do a long distance touring trip on the CBR. One of my good friends from school is moving out to Folsom, CA and wanted to look for a place to live. So we decided to combine the trips into one adventure. He doesn't know how to ride so he had to ride pillion the entire time. We left on the morning of July 3rd. I'll do a full write-up on my blog and post it. But for now just some pictures and descriptions. Most of the trip was about getting to destinations on time, so I didn't have too much time to take lots of pics.(Plus there were just huge swaths of nothing!)

Here's an approximation of the entire trip. Each marker shows an overnight stop.

Our first destination was Los Angeles, CA. We needed to get there by Sunday, July 8th before my uncle left.

Day 1

Philly to Indianapolis.

Starting mileage.

We left a bit late and got stuck in some Philly traffic. Once we were out of the city, our pace picked up and we reached in about 11.5 hours. Used advrider.com to find some tent space there. Camped out in a backyard in my 2 person backpacking tent.

Classy first night's dinner.

Who needs a rack when you can just throw things on the bike?

Day 2

Indianapolis to Sand Springs, OK

My friend needed to put in his contacts and we needed some form of toilet/sink so we stopped at the first rest area in Illinois. Found some homeless people there also using the facilities. Got some nice and cold water there as well.:)

After that we headed into Missouri and saw the St. Louis Arch. Not really any shoulder to take pictures so we kept going. Stopped at the next gas station to buy some snacks and take a break. While there I noticed a small rip on the undersides of the saddlebags. It looked as if the wheel was rubbing there on occasion because the bags were hanging too low. In order to deal with this, my friend and I took a detour out to a Home Depot to buy a 2 foot PVC pipe to stick in-between the saddlebags. It seemed to work, but I did check up on it now and again. The detour did cost us almost an hour and we reached Oklahoma a bit later than expected.

We were greeted with bizarre toll booths that gave us a 50 cent refund only to have us give it back when we got back onto the tollway.

Cheapest fuel on the trip!

Come on Oklahoma Rest Area....why were you closed when I had to go?!

We reached the next spot for the night a bit later than expected but spent the night at another advrider.com house.

New dog friends!

Day 3

Headed out in the morning towards New Mexico. Stop for the night not really planned.

Texas!

Texas grasshopper.

We ended up in Albuquerque for the night. Grabbed a motel and enjoyed a drink at a local tavern.

Day 4

End destination is Chandler, AZ to visit some family friends. Only a mere 400 miles;).

Headed through the Petrified Wood National Forest in Arizona next.

50s town for fuel!

Had to descend the mountains into the valley on Highway 88. Absolutely gorgeous! Couldn't really get pictures of the best spots, but definitely somewhere I would return to in the future!

Once we reached the valley it got hot! More than I expected. I've never been in a desert before so it was definitely a new experience. We reached Chandler and enjoyed a nice home cooked meal.:)

Awesome. How many miles in total (waiting to see the final odo reading)? How many days? I know there is still more pics and story coming. But, so far it's great. Did you experience any harsh weather on your way? There has been severe thunder storms and gusting winds in the south for a few weeks now.

Still working on collating all the images. But 6239 miles in 13 days. My return was 2800 miles in 4 days with an Iron Butt from Western Wyoming to Iowa City. I could've actually done it in 3 but I stopped to see some family near Chicago.

The biggest storms I hit were in Western PA to Harrisburg. A trailer on the back of a truck overturned. But I was probably riding much faster than most cars were. I had a lot of grip and hid behind the windscreen. Worked pretty well. Other than that, just a bit of rain east of Albuquerque.

Great pic. I want to read more of your narrative so be sure to post. I wish I had known you were coming through Chicago; I could have ridden with you for a bit.

An interesting range of shots from vast starkly beautiful landscapes to macro. It is quite a trip to do in so few days. It is a big country.

Like me on most of my longer trips, you had a bit of a mission to fulfill.

My missions were a bit more frivolous than yours though.... One was to kiss the Blarney Stone in Ireland because my long dead grandmother told me I should. Another was to buy a Swiss Army knife, in Switzerland.

Congratulations on the Iron Butt. Was that an officially registered one? Registered or not, it is something of an achievement.

Thanks Michael. It is definitely a big country. I don't think my brain really understood it until I actually did it. Your missions may have been a bit more frivolous, but still interesting as well. That must've been one good knife!;)

The Iron Butt wasn't registered, because I didn't have a start witness and was much too lazy to find some random person in the middle of nowhere Wyoming to do it. I figure I could do it again to get the certificate, but it doesn't matter too much to me, I'm happy I was able to achieve that at all. The reward was worth it, but I'll explain that when I finally get to posting some more trip pics. I've been a bit swamped with my new job and other new and fun things that have been happening in my life.:)

I was pleased with the knife, and I still have it (attached); more a backpack model than a pocket model. It is good for hunting and fishing. The blade locks open, it has the wood saw, pliers, scissors and so on, and everything has been useful. If I got another I would get one with a metal saw & file blade. There have been occasions I wished for them.

If I get to Geneva again I wouldn't mind just continuing east and following the old Silk Road to China, then hanging a right and heading on down through Laos to the Malay Peninsula. I have checked it out on Google maps. From where I used to live in England it would be a small matter of 8-9000 km, but doable with a bit of planning. A few years back I saw a couple of NX250s here in Thailand, on Swiss plates; they had been ridden here.

Thanks for posting etiainen. Amazing, impressive!

I'm curious, what kind of gas milage did you get with the luggage and a passenger?
Red CBR250R (Honda CBR250R) | Fuelly

If you look between 7/3/2012 and 7/10/2012, you can see the drop.

Usually high 40s to mid 50s depending on the headwind(There was one for a large portion of the trip).

I did manage to hit 70 or so when we were on slower state roads.

From 7/12 to 7/15 you can see my way back. 7/13 was the Iron Butt. Not too great mileage considering I was near WOT most of the time.

That is a nice knife!

Switzerland through Asia sounds like a journey of a lifetime!! It would defintely take some serious planning, but an experience to never forget!

My next trip(if I get the time now that I'm a full-time worker) would be to explore Canada and the Pacific Northwest. I know the CBR can do it!

Ok, sorry everyone, things have changed a lot for me after getting back from this trip. New job, place, and life really.

Time to finally finish posting!

So after staying in Chandler for the night, my friends who I stayed with and my riding partner took a grip to the Grand Canyon. It was quite the view! My wrists were starting to feel the burn though.(exposed area between my jacket and gloves)

After staying in Chandler one more night we set off through the Arizona desert towards Los Angeles.

It was hot and brutal, and my sunburn got pretty awful by the time we made it to LA.

The roof of the rest area made it difficult to get some shade...

After 400 or so miles and a very unwelcome introduction into LA traffic, we reached our destination..Santa Monica!
