A few weeks ago I got a "replace current bike" quote from Progressive of $1012.00 a year for the Ninja 300..I had to look at the screen a few times to make sure I wasn't hallucinating, what..the..hell. The other night, I did it again but this time I acted like I never had a policy with them in the first place..this time it was..$748.00 that being the best coverage. What the hell is up with that? Same thing when I got curious and checked out the GSXR-6 and the Ninja 650..as a "replacement" the 600 was something like $2600 a year, but $1200 as if I was totally new to a policy.

What the hell kind of shenanigans is that?

and I am 38 with a clean record since 1998. I currently pay $550 a year for the 250 with the best coverage deal.

Sometimes I wonder if all of the proper boxes are checked off in the computer when quotes come back like this.

Does the Ninja 250 have a "bad" reputation among actuaries? If so maybe the Ninja name is impacting the 300's rates.

I'm getting a pretty good deal with American Modern. Might try getting a quote from an independent agent in your area who carries them. Maybe the same agent who's selling you house or car insurance, so you could get a multi discount.

Could be a number of reasons for this. First off, did you get the "new customer" quote online? If so, how much personal info. were you asked to include? If I were to venture a guess, the most likely scenario is that the "new" quote gave you a rate approximation based upon a very small amount of information about you. Typically, online insurance quotes do not factor in a person's credit, past payment history, length of continuous insurance, or driving history. These items could make a huge difference. There could be other factors at play, too, for example: some companies offer a advance quote discount or prior carrier discount to lure new business. These discounts are designed to be offset be "loyalty" discounts as you renew your coverage in future years. Sometimes, though, the computer model dosen't work out for a particular person and there can be a difference between new and renewal pricing. The difference wouldn't be as large as what you have described, however.

Bottom line is that you should call your agent and discuss it to find out why and to find out what changes can be made to keep your rate as low as possible.

My previous comments only addressed the difference between the new quote and the renewal quote. The higher rates for the larger displacement bikes does not surprise me and other companies my offer you a better rate depending upon which bike you choose. More the reason to deal with an independent agent who can make those comparisons for you.

I am with Progressive and only pay $230 per year for four bikes, two with full coverage, and listing two additional young riders in my household. Bike insurance from Progressive is almost free when you get more than two bikes. I recently added the fourth, a 2013 Honda PCX with full coverage for a loan for $12.
What coverage did you buy?

My regular insurer, AAA doesn't offer motorcycle insurance in this area so I looked at Geico and Progressive. Geico consistently returned better quotes.

I suspect I could get an even better deal if I went to an agent and got a package deal for the cars/house/motorcycle.

Yikes. I'm 47, have 5 bikes, and 2 atvs insured with them for about $700 a year.

I prefer to just call them.

A few years back, I had Progressive on my car through an agent and went online to price check them against themselves. I had to lie like you did and say I had no existing policy. Went from paying $750* every 6 months to $235/6 months. They jacked my rate up this year to $350/6 months for no reason so I shopped it and switched to GEICO for the same $235 I was paying.

My Progressive insurance on the CBR is something like $102/year. I'd shop the **** out of that rate, man. Calling them won't change their mind.

Shop the rate.

* all prices are approximate

Crazy thing is, if you had 3 bikes it would only be $900.

Holy crap; insurance is expensive in the US. I pay for an All-risk (I guess that's basically Best Coverage - if I would fall with the bike I'd get payed for it) insurance around 400 euro's a year for my CBR250R. I'm 25 and only got 3 years of no-claim. Legal (minimum) coverage would cost me 75 euro's a year.

Funny thing is, I applied with 2 years (thinking I only had 2 years) and they corrected it to 3 years. Good, good! I love my cooperative insurance company; at the end of the year I usually get some money back too (I'm a member and not just a client) when they've made profit.

I don't know if it's the same in the States but here in Australia insurance companies typically charge more for a renewal than they do for a new online quote. They seem to have a mentality that if you are already with them that you'll just pay whatever they put on the renewal notice. Bugger that!!!! For every car, home and now bike renewel I go online and get a couple of different quotes, usually ring them up and tell them I can get it cheaper somewhere else. The company I'm with don't "price match" but they genreally do come down to something that's pretty close and so end up staying with them....for some reason they play this game every year:confused:

Yes USA gets ridiculous insurance rates, when I bought my 250 I paid 5100 peso $123 USD for 3 years of comprehensive insurance, then I called the same company that they insured my bike with and got full coverage for it for the same 3 years for another 5100 peso. So $246 USD for theft, collision, dismemberment, anything..... Its 100% covered, as am I and my wife :)

Same with my 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer just cost more as the car cost more. Just over $750 USD for 3 years full coverage.
