Thanks Luke, this graphic illustrates the braking/turning force relationship. Once this is understood, trail-braking and other techniques are easier to understand. The difficult part is feeling the limit of the tires, when the resultant force vector is reaching the 'edge of the circle'

Hope that was sarcasm, as mine
"Sarcasm" might be too strong a word. "Satire" might be more like it.

No offence intended to Luke earlier in this thread, though my first post in it was a bit strong. It is just that, as a teacher myself, I know that some try to teach by baffling their students with their own knowledge.

A teacher needs to know plenty, but effective instructing is often better achieved by putting things in relatively simple terms (aka KISS; Keep It Simple Stupid), while having the science available to answer questions that might come up.

The reason I have bumped this thread is because I think FastCBR should read Luke's original post...... and maybe some of the simplified versions further down the thread.

Micheal your replying to a comment that was made 2 years ago...
If the other guy does not respond right away just wait 2 more years
OP (and Moderator) Luke is still around, albeit pretty much in the background these days. TheMente hasn't posted since September last year, but I am not after a response from him.

The reason I dug up this thread from the past is that it is relevant to a topic that is being discussed now, especially the opening post.

if you want to have a really good look at something
[the latest honda say] brain will co-opt legs to
walk around it, allowing eyes to capture
photons bouncing off it, thus giving you
a better range of imagery..
a better look at it..

similarly, in understanding braking forces, traction
while leaning and so on, its always good to
give brain plenty of input.. be it suck it and see
or measure it and know what else is happening..

as a real analogy, heart patients who research heart disease
and so on, when controlled for all other factors, have
better outcomes - measured in heart attacks and deaths -
than similar heart patients without, input of knowledge..

point being, brain is involved in all bodily functions and actions
[including riding motorcycles] and can and does make use of
any relevant knowledge about [whatever] which translates
to better performance capabilities..
this is not limited to intellectual processing or surface thinking,
but is nevertheless part of normal brain function, and thus
potential general and specific body functioning..

ie, all knowledge, regardless, is good and beneficial..

I put a driving licence in my pocket. It stops the police from damaging my wallet.
Unless you count the 500baht "Farang with no plastic lid fee" from the boys in the kiosk by Karon beach, (or Rat-U-Thit, or name your favorite spot) 555.

Hell, I got stung for 2000B for dropping a cigarette butt in the gutter on Sukhommvit. (talked 'em down to 600). Unless you're married to a police colonels daughter, there ain't no way to keep a Thai cop outta' your wallet. The boys need their "Tea" now don't they?
