I'm a new proud owner (two months so far, and 190 VERY cold miles) of a 2012 tri-color and I'm looking for a good tank bag. If anyone can post a pic of their bag with brand I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm a bit particular: I'd prefer magnetics and they have to lie fairly smoothly. I used to have a VFR800 and the only bag I liked on it (after four tries) was the cortech tank bag with the gas cap mount. loved it. Because of the setup of this bike's tank (no screws) I can't mount the same bag.

I've been eyeballin' the firstgear stuff, cortech, and Givi. I tend to lean towards the non-rectangle style bag. Max storage capacity isn't a big concern of mine; just need something to hold the essentials.

thanks in advance!

Well, if you have Cycle Gear stores there, you can forget using any Bilt bag they sell. The pad on the bottom of their bags are not soft enough. In one short trip using one of their magnetic bags, a couple deep gouges in the tank were caused by a small piece of grit which got caught between the tank and pad. Add vibration and bag movement when going over bumps, and it's a recipe for scratched paint. And I keep my paint clean, too, so it must have just been grit kicked up by the front tire. Look for fleece on the bottom of the tank bag, or sew some one yourself. The deep fleece gobbles up stray grit instead of being ground into your paint by the entire weight of the bag. I've toured all over the US with fleece-backed tankbags, some of which I added the fleece, and never had a scratch caused by grit. I sew the stuff to the backs of my saddlebags, too, if it doesn't already have it.

Keep in mind what one person doesn't call a scratch another will -- for that reason I'll never use a magnetic bag on the 250 (when I upgrade, I do plan on getting a ring-lock on like the OP had).

If you do get one, I'd recommend looking into tankslapper film -- Essentially it is the same/similar to what is used to clearbra a car, and given the cheap price if it did scratch the film you could just remove and replace it:

I have the icon urban tank bag and I love it. . I got it on a great deal for $15 however it did scratch up my tank pretty bad, gotta love dusty New Mexico. Oh well, I plan on repainting the bike when I pay it off. I will take a pic tommrow morning.

Went with the Moto centric 14 liter tank bag. Fits all my necessities and then some. Actually rode without it today for the first time since I got it - and it felt weird. That magnets hold it well and even loaded up it has never had a problem.
By the way - enjoy the cold riding. Any fool can ride when it's 70+ degrees! And tri-color's RULE

I use a Ventura Thruxton tank bag. It's about 20 litres, attaches via magnets and holds a [email protected] load of stuff. As I commute to work, it has wet weather gear, work shoes, work pants, lunch, wallet, phone, keys, building access card etc. Normally also an iPad.

On occasion, I've even managed to fit my 15" MacBook Pro in there... wouldn't recommend that though for a couple of reasons. Main one being - do you REALLY want all your data rubbing up against some super-powerful magnets? Didn't think so!

Just got a greatt tank bag.. a bit small but as u said u weren't lookin for something huge.
It cost around 40 and is made by Coleman.. it sticks to the tank with magnets like u want as well.. the bag was developed by Paul Jr. Other than it being smaller than I thought it would be I think its a great bag at a great price enough room for all the essentials. And a map/phone/tablet see thru slot that works great as well for either your map or touchscreen phone or tablet. Don't have any pix at the moment but will snap a couple for u when I get home.
