Starting clutch issue/questions

397 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Exmoz
So I got my friends 250 that I’m working on, after taking the cover off I noticed the gear that turns the motor spins both ways making me think the one way clutch bearing inside is toast, I got another one off eBay claiming it came off a running bike that was wrecked but when I installed it the gear would spin a little then just seize up until I wiggled it around, I was looking at the actual bearing pieces on both bearings and they looked like the pieces that catch the gear are in different directions then the other, my question is 1 is there a certain way the actual bearing pieces are supposed to face, 2 is there any way I can maybe fix the old bearing clutch, and 3 are both these pieces just fu(ked. Not sure if I can post a vid since the file is to large

Did you bench test the sprag clutch that it would turn counterclockwise smoothly but not the other way around?
Yeah I tested the newish bearing I got and it’ll spin freely one way and catch the other way but then would seize up and not turn either way unless you pull them apart a little
Yes I tested it and with the newish bearing it spins one way smoothly and the other way it would catch and seize so it can’t go either way
Well, if you bench test and the sprag clutch seizes up occasionally, then I imagine the sprag clutch is toast.

I've never heard of anyone fixing the sprag clutch. Not sure if it's something that can be done.

YES

NO: There is no way to repair a worn bearing,

NOT likely. According to what you say, the last one you purchased is fine. You claim that after the catch it doesn't release, mmm...I suggest you check it after full assembly.
Check the Out diameter of the gear (51.685mm MIN), maybe it needs to be replaced as well.

And Yes, the direction of assembly is important.
If I'm guessing right then it's like the diagram below, that's my guess.
Feel free to check if I'm right.

I got a bike that was abandoned on apartment property they said if I remove it I can have it but I'ma need a salvage title on it. Could this be real or what is it that simple and good to be true.please respond asap with a strategy and real words of advice

To me, it sounds like you're just taking on someone else's disposal problem.
I'm doubtful that an "abandoned" bike can be rehabilitated cheaply enough to make it worth the effort. It was obviously abandoned for a reason. Probably an expensive one.
Without the original title it could be stolen or you could have trouble registering it for other reasons.
Personally, I would pass. If you're determined to go forward, I would at the very least not agree to remove the bike until you've obtained the salvage title and have it in hand.

Whether the advice you received here is good or not, it's up to you to decide.
My tips for you:
1. A motorcycle that has not been in used for a long time, and has been neglected, requires a lot of resources to bring it back to life.
2. Assuming you are willing to invest time, effort, and money to bring a abandoned motorcycle back to life. That still doesn't mean that the current bike is the best deal for such a project.
3. In my opinion, don't touch it if in a simple inspection it looks like junk.

If the owner allows you, take some close-up photos and uplaod them for us to see, and maybe that will help us understand together the condition of the motorcycle you are talking about???
Hi there, my cbr250 is in the process of being rebuilt all thanks to a Honda factory in India and DHL.

If you need parts, please DM me I'll share the guy's whatsapp/phone number.
Also guided him on how to setup PayPal so payment is safe.

You'll see my post on the forum for my rebuild in progress. So far I've received piston kit, crank kit and all other parts needed which was not available in South Africa.

The parts are really affordable from India, and brand new sealed in OEM packaging.
