Someone posted a thread a while back about cutting out some plastic to make the storage compartment more usable. Great idea so I did mine today. I couldn't find the thread so I am starting a new one.

This is a very easy, quick modification. It took me way less than an hour to do. All you need is a utility knife, patch material and two screws.

The plastic removal was suprisingly easy! The plastic cuts like butter!!!
Remove all the plastic like in the pic. When done you will have a rectangle hole. I found a piece of plastic to use as a patch to keep dirt and water out.

I tried putting a bottle of water in there but the plastic by the seat locking mechanism was in the way. I cut two notches in the plastic(arrows in the pic points to the notches). Now two bottles fit in there nicely!

In the other post he didn't modify for the water. I found it very important to carry water on hot days!

It seems like there is a little extra room under the storage area. Has anyone looked into completely pulling out the plastic "box" and replacing it with something a little deeper?
I've been waiting for the aftermarket to pick up on this and offer up a deeper under-cowl storage box. So far, no luck though. :(

This is genius! Doing it to mine tonight 100% but I am having some trouble figuring out what you meant by "I found a piece of plastic to use as a patch to keep dirt and water out". I might be just misunderstanding what you're saying but where does this patch go and how big is it? Do you happen to have a pic?

Thanks mate!

Cut out all the unneeded plastic, you will see a small rectangle hole that needs to be covered on the right side.

I found a [brand new] razor knife to be not real effective against the plastic.
I went to the hardware store to find something for my Dremel rotary tool, and came home with this:

It made short work of that plastic, and allowed me to get into the nooks and crannies easily.
This is how mine looks today:

Right now all I have hooked up is my horns, accessory outlet for heated vest and a charger pigtail that doubles as power for my GPSr, until I can figure out something more elegant.

Don't Panic,
If you switch over to a lithium iode battery not only would you lose 3 lbs (1/2 horse power gain) you could put that fuse system under the seat! The L.I. batteries are very small. They are about $90.00.

Thanks for the tip, Randy, but I have SO many other $90 things to do to this bike before I replace the brand new battery. :)
I'm not worried about a little room under the seat. Got my old (big) tank bag installed.

I am bumping this thread! Yesterday it was 85 f. and the water came in handy for two of us! Twice last summer having water made a difference.
Once stopped on the highway waiting for an accident to clear on a 95 f. day!
The other one was unexpected. I had my toilet kit with me on a group ride. One of the members rear tire got impaled slightly by road debree. We took one of my bottles of water and put a broken up bar of soap(from a hotel the small ones!) in it. Then shake well. Next we poured the soapy water over the damaged tire! No bubbles and no leak!!! We continued the ride and now I also carry a small hotel bar of soap with me too!

I did the same thing to my tool tray a while ago and put a thin piece of utility carpet in to neaten it up. I also took the left over rubber strap, pulled off the metal keepers and zip tied it to the plastic hooks under the rear seat. It holds my insurance / registration papers in a plastic bag and a piece of semi flexible plastic to keep it flat.

I did mine so I could carry my 1911 in it. I managed to do it just to fit the holster. I have to stay legal while on base so the magazine is mounted inside the fairings to be "separated" from the firearm. Off base I just load it and clip it to my belt.

I might cut it wide open like those here as it makes more sense.

I will soon be mounting a charger in the "dash" as soon as I get the guts to drill it. Right now, I install it in in the under seat and run the charger cord up to my tank bag for my phone.
