Throttle Has Play before engaging? Problem?

Hey guys, Ive noticed that my cbr250's throttle has a bit of play before the throttle is actually engaged. Is anyone else having the same problem? Is this just a standard on the bike? And does anyone know of any way to adjust it? It feels like the throttle handle just moves without engaging the cable for a small amount.

Mine had a lot of play when i took delivery. I adjusted it out (the manual has instructions for the procedure if you're not comfortable), but i noticed that when they did the 600-mile they put a bit of play back in it.

There's a range, stay close to the bottom and you'll find it easier to control the bike, especially at low speeds.
Great I'll have to check that out when I'm off work. Do you remember what tools you needed?
Two wrenches, small ones... maybe an 8mm and a 7? (translated: NO)
it should be just adjustable, everything ive owned honda always had play with the throttle that does absoluty nothing and i just end up tightening it all
If you remove all the play, the ride becomes jerky. Most bikes have play, I am betting race bikes have some freeplay.
When you reduce the the play just make sure engine rpm doesn't change when you move the handlebars full lock left or right.
dlallen is right.

When I took my friend's kwaka ninja in for servicing, I asked about the throttle play, and the mechanic told me it's normal for all mechanical levers on a bike handle to have play.
The main reason is you need the play because the handle itself turns.
For example, if there is no play, and you turn the handle left, (and this motion causes the throttle cable to pull) then it will engage the throttle without you twisting the throttle... if that makes sense.
Same idea for clutch and brakes. A bit of play is required so the turning of the handles do not engage the components.
Both throttle and clutch are supposed to have play. Without play the clutch may not be fully engaged and it'll be like the clutch is "slipping".
Zip Tie Throttle free-play Mod affecting RPMs at left or right bar lock?

Does anyone know if doing the zip tie mod to quicken your throttle response will cause RPMs to change when the bars are at full left or right lock?

You would just have to re-adjust the cable free play after installing the zip tie.

On my bike, the throttle cables have the least amount of free play or slack when the handle bars are in the full left lock position, so that's where I position the bars when checking/adjusting the cable free play. I would imagine that this will be the same for all CBR250R's (unless the throttle cables happen to be routed incorrectly).

I set mine at 1/16" free play in the full left lock position, so that with the bars straight ahead I've got about 1/8" of free play.
How much would be too much free play? Just curious.

I think a 1/4" of rotation at the grip is borderline excessive... with the handle bars straight ahead, 1/8" is perfect.
Well I think mine might need some adjusting. How do you measure it? Estimate?

There is a faint mold line on the grip flange that you can use as a reference point to measure it with a small ruler (I'll admit that I don't actually measure the free play... I adjust it by feel, after many years working as a motorcycle technician).

Page 71 of the U.S./English version of the Owner's Manual shows the throttle free play adjustment.

Also, make sure you check the free play with the handle bars in the full left lock position, as this is where the throttle cables typically have the least amount of slack due to the routing of the cables.

Okay I will make sure to check at full turn. Thanks for the advice.
Awesome. I noticed after every service the freeplay was very minimal making it much more responsive. Upon mileage I notice a lot of freeplay. Enough to where I have to bend of wrist more so than normal. Good think I used the search button! Could also be why I peak around 85 :|
