I almost wonder if the bolt is designed to break off before you strip the female threads from too much torque...it acts kind of like a shear pin. Pain in the neck but not as bad as a stripped hole in the crankcase.

I would take the broken pieces to an auto parts store to see if you can get a close metric replacement...do you have KOI (Kentucky Motors) in your area? If not I've had great luck with Advance Auto Parts and Auto Zone.

Be easy on the torque until you can get an OEM factory replacement.

I didn't see an answer to the question, how hard were you turning them, and did it break inside the hole or was some sticking out?
With a small diamter bolt like that I usually hold a typical 3/8" ratchet drive about halfway down the handle to avoid excessive torque.

I guess I was turning it to hard half of it broke off inside the hole but I managed to get it out. Thanks for the tip
Looks like I'm back to 4 wheels till I can get the bolts

Heres a thought and i dont know for sure if it will work . If you can get the broken part of the bolt out check and see if the magneto cover bolts on the other side will fit .. length wise . Much more important to have oil in the bike and you could get away for the weekend with a bolt missing on the mag side of the bike ( The left side when sitting on the bike)

Thats what us northern ******* Mechanics would do anyways :D

That's not a bad idea. As long as it won't harm the bike lol. I'm still pretty new to bike mechanics

As a licensed Automotive and heavy duty mechanic , and someone who spent his youth racing MX i can assure you that it wont hurt anything in the short term to have a bolt missing on the Mag cover . I'd be way more worried about leaking the oil out the filter housing .

Dont use the top 2 bolts as they look ho hold the starter in place . The front bolt will work . I just checked and its about 1/4" longer then the rear filter housing bolt and screws in fine without bottoming out . Just make sure you put the bolt back next week when you get the correct one .

S.S. isn't the strongest fastener available, but I think in a case like this, they will probably be superior to OEM (CBR250R OEM, that is).

Just don't get crazy tightening these down, or you WILL have stripped threads in the engine case.

A good tool for this job (and many others?):

FYI, considering I just went through the same, the oil filter bolts are the same size as the ones holding the sprocket cover onto the other side of the engine:

Honda Motorcycle Parts 2012 CBR250R AC LEFT CRANKCASE COVER Diagram
(Number 4 in that diagram)

Cannibalized one for now to get the bike up and running, and will pick up another next week to replace the one I borrowed from the cover.

I had the exact same problem. Had one snap on my oil filter cover before I got to 9ft/lbs. From what I'm told, no torque wrench is very accurate at that low of a setting. Mechanic I talked to doesn't ever use one that low. He told me to hold the wrench as close to the socket as possible, don't hold clear out on the handle. Then just barely snug them down. I've never had a leak that way.

I know the feeling, it sucks. Luckily live a block away from a honda dealer :D
