My bike has just clicked over 60,000km (99% without pillion) and is still on the original rear shock. It seems there is sufficient dampening when pressing down on the rear.

How long do they usually last?

It varies, but usually for the useful life of the bike. As long as it's not leaking fluid, it's generally fine. If it hasn't been off-roaded I haven't seen one blow.

I haven't seen anyone replace a rear shock since my neighbor restored a Vincent Black Shadow in the 60s. We've come a long way, baby. LOL.
Ditto to all cbrlocal says and try a stiffer setting if you can just for the heck of it. Dealers don't usually adjust the shock for individual riders. I found the stock setting too be way too soft.
