Your bike make this noise?

Just curious, I picked up my CBR 250 yesterday, and now have 80km's on it. Riding it normally, not winding it up etc. Have not passed 6500RPM as of yet. My question is, when cruising at around 5500RPM, i definitely hear some sort of valve tick/noise going on. Anyone else experience this?

Perhaps you have identified the problem, which should be sorted at the first service.
Noise

It's only got 60 miles on it, can't be the valves already.
Mine does the same thing. I think it is the valves. Mine started pretty early, too. I guess I will find out after my first service, though I have to wait until I fix the damage from my crash, then put another 160 miles on it before the first service.
Could it be bad valves, bad oil pump? Did you check the oil? Its been known to happen that a vehicle was delivered with too little or no oil.
If it sounds that bad take it back to the dealer.
Are you sure youre not hearing the chain?
I also got that kind of problem. It makes the bike sounds raw and like something is shaking or knocking, honestly i don't know what it was. Even in my first service, i told the mechanic but he doesn't really know it because for him it's a new kind of engine (whaaaat????)

i just hope you can ask the mechanic in your dealer to give a solution, and share it here.

Not the valves as such, could be the tappet clearance.

I have seen reports of tappet noise on some bikes on other forums, which is fixed up at the first service.

The reason that there is a valve clearance check at the first service is because the first miles are effectively a shakedown. Once everything is settled in they check the tappet clearance, and replace the shims if necessary. Once that is done there is a inspection scheduled every 16,000 miles. Chances are that no more adjustment (actually replacing shims) will be required for the life of the engine.
noise

Oil is perfect. I made them add 100ml at the dealership as it was too low for my liking. I do agree that it's probably tappet noise. Better to hear it, than to not! I do know that my dealer (powerhouse) does not inspect the valves at the first service unless you ask them. They listen to them. However, you can't hear a tight valve though, can you!? I will do the valve service myself after 600 miles. Other than the tappet noise at certain RPM, she purrs like a kitty kat, and I'm the envy of town.

I never heard my valves until I got my first service. They told me honda requires them to adjust the valves on our first service. So they did and charged me for it of course. Now I can definitely hear my engine a bit more but it sounds like a real bike now, at first it was quiet like a scooter, now it sounds kinda like a transformer about to change form lol.
I agree..Tappet noise...been hearing others complain about it also on other forums
....one even wondered if honda would finally admit a problem and issue a recall because of the shims

I don't know that it is really a problem.

Shims come in different thicknesses, and an appropriate one is installed to give the correct gap. The engine builders might get it right when they assemble the engine, or the gap may need to be adjusted with a different shim at the first service, after the engine has settled down.

To my way of thinking, the first service should be free (included in the price of the bike) because of that. It is in some countries. It is really the final stage of assembly, so should be the responsibility of the manufacturer.
I bet it is looser valves set up that way to break in the seat on very small light weight valves and springs. once the seats are broke in, the valves will need adjusting and will run quieter at the breakin tune up. When a valve seat is cut, itis cut at certain angles and depths leaving a narrow land, which is the seat. It is not finished it will get pounded by the valve, minutely wider and fit to the valve. The seat will only pound out so far because it will workharden. with hydraulic lifters, you just break it in and keep going. With shim or screw adjust you need to check the valve clearance to make up for the added slack of the break in period. it is small clearance, but it is noisier, and it is detracting from the actual cam lift by the same amount that it is out of spec. so look out when they take that .0015 to .003 outta there, wheelie machines everywhere!!

Another thought is that it could be weak tensioners. Again, I only hear it at 5000rpm. At that point, it comes in and out like bb's in a can. If the tensioner is controlled via oil pressure, that could be the culprit. I have read that the 600's have this issue, and most people end up putting manual tensioners in them to rid the clacking noise.

Could be that too. Whatever, it should be sorted at the first service. If it is a worry, get it looked at sooner. It should be part of the deal when buying a new vehicle.

The guy who overhauled the engine of my 14 year old Dream 100 left me in no doubt. If there were any problems, he would fix them, at no cost to me.

If a little one man and his missus workshop can take responsibility for for their work, surely Honda and big dealers can do the same.
Noise

Yeah, I'm gonna keep riding it. It seems to be at one particular RPM and even sporadic then. I was reading on Thai Visa forum of someone who had a knocking at 4-5K RPM. Since he was in Thailand, Honda sent an engineer and took the bike back. Said it was a problem burning oil, something to do with the piston (their fault), and replaced it, the skirt etc, and problem solved. It's really hard to know on this bike since it's such a new motor. Hopefully it will go away. If there is an issue with it, parts availability will be problematic right now.
update

Spoke with KW Honda today, and they said their demo bike with 88kms makes the same noise. It's more of a rattle than a knock, and I agree. Knock was the wrong word. Perhaps it will work itself out with more km's, I don't know.
Valves

Well, I have 200km on the clock, and the rattle is still there. I popped open the valve cover today and found the following; the intakes are on spec, the exhausts are tight. Spec for exhaust is 0.011 plus/minus 0.001. My exhaust valves are at 0.008. Too tight. Guys at the dealership told me to keep riding until I get to my 1K, then adjust. As long as I have some clearance I should be okay.

True, just don't ride too hard until it is adjusted. Well done on investigating, and sharing. I reckon your bike is going to be fine.

Our macho "hard break" proponents like to go on about sealing rings, or whatever other technical sounding waffle. But "running in" is more about a shake down period before inspecting and adjusting, more or less the last stage of building.

I wonder what response this gets? Flame away guys!!
